Lady Bengals open season with win against ranked opponent
The LSU Eunice Lady Bengal softball team opened its 2013 season with a 2-0 win over Heartland College on Saturday morning.
The Lady Bengals (1-0), ranked fourth in the first NJCAA Division II poll, scored single runs in the third and fifth innings against Heartland (0-1), ranked eighth in the same poll.
“It’s always good to start the season with a W,” head coach
Andy Lee said.
Freshman pitcher
Julianne Broussard went the distance for the Lady Bengals in her collegiate debut, striking out six and allowing just two hits in the win.
“(Broussard) stepped up, we are expecting a lot out of her this year. For a freshman to go in there and compete like that, I’m very proud of her,” he added.
LSU Eunice sophomore
Brooke Thomas led the offensive attack, finishing 2-4 with a pair of singles.
Brooke Clark finished 1-1 with two walks and an RBI single, while
Randi Vosburg finished 1-2 with a single and walk.
Tied through the first two innings, the Lady Bengals pushed across their first run in the third inning when Pam Wainwright walked before eventually coming around to score. The hosts tacked on an insurance run in the fifth when Kelsey Hollier walked and scored on Clark’s RBI single back up the middle.
The Lady Bengals now turn around and play San Jacinto at 2 p.m. before hosting Heartland in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon. All games can be seen on
Bengal All-Access.
