Bengals take second game of series behind strong pitching
Box Score
The LSU Eunice baseball team received an outstanding pitching performance from freshman Chad Reeves on Saturday night as they took the second game of their series against Kellogg Community College by an 11-2 score.
Reeves tossed seven innings and allowed just three hits and one run while walking three and striking out six batters, including striking out the side in his final inning, for his fourth victory of the season.
“The leadoff batter got a 0-2 hit in that situation but after that time, he settled in and threw well,” head coach Jeff Willis said of Reeves’ performance.
That leadoff batter would come around to score to give Kellogg (0-2) the early lead, but the Bengals (13-3) answered back with single runs in the third and fourth innings before a three-run fifth and six runs in the eighth for the final score.
Casey Rodrigue and Buddy McCoy each finished with two hits and two RBI for LSU Eunice to pace the offense, while Trent Vidrine and Adam Cagnina picked up the other two hits for the hosts.
The first Bengal run came in the third, when Derek Herrington (0-2, 3 BB) led off the inning with a walk before moving around the bases and scoring on a Landon Thibodeaux RBI groundout. The following inning, McCoy led off with a double to center field before later scoring on a sacrifice bunt by Dalton DeLeon (0-1, 2 RBI, 2 BB).
The three-run fifth featured an RBI single by McCoy, which was the only hit in the inning that featured three walks and a hit by pitch as well, while the Bengals left the bases loaded to end the inning.
After seeing Kellogg add a run in the top of the inning, the Bengals were finally able to bust the game open in the bottom eighth, scoring the six runs on a pair of hits, two Kellogg errors and five walks, while Cagnina and Rodrigue both had RBI singles.
LSU Eunice and Kellogg will wrap up their series tomorrow afternoon with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
“It’ll come down to which team plays hard tomorrow. We were in this situation last weekend and I didn’t feel like we came out and played very hard in the third game, and little did we know we’d lose,” Willis said.
Tomorrow’s game can be seen on Bengal All-Access.
