LOS ANGELES – The Louisiana State University at Eunice Lady Bengals improved to 8-4 on the season after coming from behind late in the second period to beat East Los Angeles College 75-60 here Wednesday.
The sixth ranked Lady Bengals struggled early in the contest, not scoring until almost four minutes into the game and shooting only 17 percent from the floor in the first period.
“I was worried there for a little while,” said head coach Michael Bari. “It goes to show that good kids and good effort will get you a win.”
Bari’s girls trailed by five at the half and in the opening minutes of the second period, the Lady Huskies opened up a nine point lead.
At the fifteen minutes mark in the second half, LSUE went on 9-0 run that tied the contest. The Lady Bengals matched East LA basket for basket and then with 11 minutes, LSUE moved out in front for good.
LSUE opened up a 13 point lead, spearheaded by Kayla Armstrong, Chelsie Guillory, Natalie Engler and Ariel Dimes.
Armstrong scored 13 points in the final seven minutes and finished with 27 points on the night.
“(Armstrong) was terrific,” said Bari. “She took the team on her back and willed a win for us.”
The Lady Bengals return to Eunice for a seven game home stretch. They will open 2008 with the Lady Bengal New Years Classic on January 4 and 5.
