Brady Bourque slides into home plate during game two with Southwest Tennessee.
Bengals Sweep Southwest Tennessee
It didn’t take Bengal head coach Jeff Willis to know what kind of team he had put together for the 2008 season. The Bengals came from behind to win their first game of the season 5-3 against Southwest Tennessee Community College and then LSUE went on to route Southwest 6-0 and 7-2 to start the season 3-0.
The Bengals trailed SW Tenn 2-0 early in the first game, but then knocked in five unanswered runs by the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead.
The five runs were sparked by two sacrifice plays in the bottom of the second inning that drove in Kellen Bozeman.
Bozeman would finish the first game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Matt Creel finished 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
The Bengals controlled game two with SW Tenn from the first pitch. LSUE would win 6-0 and while the bats were swinging it was defense and pitching that gave the Bengals the edge.
Corey Lopez pitched the first five innings of the game, facing 18 batters. He struck out five, walked three and allowed only two hits. Josh Bailey relieved Lopez for the final two innings. He struck out two of the six batters he faced and held Southwest Tennessee to no hits.
Nate Peterson finished 3-for-3 and scored two runs in game two.
Southwest Tennessee scored first in game three, but the Bengals wasted no time capturing the lead.
LSUE batters out scored SW Tennessee 7-1 in the first six innings and the Bengals improved to 3-0 on the season.
Michael Billings was 1-for-1 with one run scored and two RBIs. Creel finished 2-for-4.
Five pitchers came in for Bengals, but Brandon Chambers earned the win. He pitched four innings, allowed two hits and struck out four SW Tenn batters.
