EUNICE - It was not the kind of way the Bengal softball team wanted to start the season. The Bengals fell to Galveston in both games of their opening season 8-0 and 5-2.

LSUE had a shot early in the first game, but left two runners stranded and opened the door for Galveston.

The Whitecaps scored a run in the top of the second inning and then busted the game open with seven runs in the final three innings.

The Bengals managed only two hits in the first game, with Rhea Person and Chasity Fontenot each earning one. LSUE’s pitcher Fagan Willoughby however gave up 13 hits and is credited with the loss.

In game two with Galveston, the Bengals again threaten early, only to leave runners stranded, but this time, when the Whitecaps scored a run in the second inning, LSUE answered with a run.

Willoughby’s double in the bottom of the second inning drove in Kim St. Amaunt and tied the game at 1-1.

Galveston added three runs in the third and the Bengals tried to answer, but once again left runners in scoring position.

LSUE closed the lead to 4-2 when Jessica Cooper scored on a sacrifice by Fontenot.

Galveston scored a run late in the seventh inning and improved to 2-0 on the season, while LSUE fell to 0-2.

Leigh Jukes finished 2-for-4 and Cooper was 1-for-4 with a run scored. Elizabeth Kaiser picked up the loss for LSUE, allowing nine hits in seven innings.
