MILLINGTON - LSU Eunice came from eight runs down to win their second game of the 2008 NJCAA Divsion II World Series 14-12 over Elgin Community College in a slugfest here late Sunday.
In a contest saw over 30 hits, Elgin (32-15) scored eight runs in the first three innings, but teams that have scouted LSU Eunice know not to get comfortable with large leads.
The Bengals (50-12) showed them why in the bottom of the fourth inning. LSUE cut the Elgin’s lead to two with a six-run inning.
LSUE hit two home runs in the inning. Nate Peterson hit a three-run blast and Boomer Blanchard added another, his second in as many days.
Suddenly the momentum was drained from the Spartans in the seventh inning when Delta Cleary hit a triple with two men on, and then scored on an errant throw by Elgin’s Greg Stolzenburg. LSUE took an 11-10 lead briefly after scoring five.
Elgin fought back, taking the lead in the top of the eighth after adding two runs to the board.
A sacrifice fly by LSUE’s Brady Borque in the bottom of the inning tied the game and Chase Blanchard hit the game-winning triple that drove in two runs, putting the Bengals up 14-12.
LSUE advances one step closer to the championship game by winning. They will face Lenoir Community College Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
