Clinton, MS. - The top-ranked LSU Eunice Lady Bengal softball team won their first two games at the NJCAA DII Region 23 Tournament Thursday and moved one game away from the NJCAA World Series.
In game one, the Lady Bengals broke open a 4-2 game with 12 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on 10 hits in a 16-2 win over East Mississippi Community College. Offensively, the Lady Bengals were led by freshman Logane Fuselier (Oberlin) who went 3 for 3 at the plate with two three-run home runs and a double. Sophomore Haley McCall also added a solo home run. On the mound, sophomore Heather Abshire threw a complete game which ended after five innings via the run rule.
In game two, the Lady Bengals defeated Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College by a score of 8-3 in nine innings. The Lady Bengals scored five runs in the top of the ninth on beginning with two consecutive squeeze bunts after they loaded the bases with no outs. Heather Abshire added insurance with a two-RBI single. Heather Abshire relieved starting pitcher Tina Shulz in the third inning and went the rest of the way to earn her second win of the day.
The Lady Bengals (50-9) will play East Central Mississippi Community College at 2 p.m. today.
