Lady Bengals fall victim to sharp shooting again
Box Score For the second straight contest, the LSU Eunice Lady Bengal basketball team ran into a sharp shooting opponent, as visiting Angelina College shot over 50 percent from the field en route to a 92-77 home loss on Friday night.
Angelina (6-5) shot 62 percent from the floor in the game’s opening half to jump out to a 12 point halftime advantage before finishing the night shooting 54 percent to steal the road victory.
“We got down early, and again, the fifth game in a row where we shot less than 35 percent. We are struggling to defend and defend hard, but I thought the girls played really hard tonight,” head coach
Michael Bari said.
“We have to defend better. We have to have better help side defense. Our on-ball defense is getting worse as we go. We are going to have to get back to basics and try to play better fundamentally on defense,” Bari added.
The Lady Bengals ( 3-5) finished the night shooting just 33 percent, and only 26 percent from three-point range, but saw themselves in the game in the second half, cutting the Angelina lead to just four points with under 10 minutes to go in the contest.
LSU Eunice saw four players tally double-digit nights, with freshman
Taylor Hurd leading the way with a 20-point performance.
LIda Politopoulou finished with 18 points of her own, while
Meghan Cross and
Feleshia Walters contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Angelina saw its’ own share of double-digit scorers, with Cekret Brooks finishing the night with a game-high 22 points. Lexi Harris (20 points), Demetria Foreman (19 points) and Areana Davis (11 points) rounded out the visitors’ top performers.
The Lady Bengals now turn right back around and host Dodge City Community College tomorrow night with a 5 p.m. tipoff.
“We are going to have to press (Dodge City) a little bit to create some opportunities for ourselves, and if we do that we can get going,” Bari said.
