Defensive effort fuels Lady Bengal road victory in Baton Rouge
Box Score The LSU Eunice Lady Bengals held Baton Rouge Community College to just 18 percent shooting on the way to a 52-40 road victory on Wednesday night.
The Lady Bengals (6-12 overall, 2-1 Miss-Lou Conference) held Baton Rouge (12-7, 2-1) to just 17 first half points – seven coming from the free throw line – en route to the win. LSU Eunice took the lead for good just over five minutes into the ball game, extending the lead out to as much as 16 points before the final margin.
“We really emphasized defense, and did a couple different things defensively, and shut them down tonight. This was probably one of the better games we’ve played, at least in the second semester for sure,” head coach
Michael Bari said.
“We’ve got people playing really well right now and hopefully that continues over the next nine games,” he added.
Defensively, the Lady Bengals held the hosts to just 14-for-77 shooting from the floor on the night, including zero baskets from behind the three-point line in the win. LSU Eunice shot 37 percent from the floor and 33 percent from long range.
Meghan Cross had a huge night for the Lady Bengals, finishing with 20 points on 8-for12 shooting, grabbing 11 rebounds as well, while
Lida Politopoulou added 17 points, eight rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocks.
Chesley Dubroc finished with eight points and five rebounds, while
Taylor Hurd added four points and nine rebounds.
Brooke Richard added two points and three rebounds to round out the scoring.
Talaih Robertson was the only double-digit scorer for Baton Rouge, finishing with 13 points while adding 11 rebounds.
The Lady Bengals now return home for the first time since December when they take on Southern-Shreveport on Saturday afternoon inside the HPRE Center.
Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. for the first game of a four-game home stand for LSU Eunice.
