Comeback win pushes Lady Bengals to 5-0 for first time in program history
The LSU Eunice women's basketball team came away with a hard-fought, come from behind 66-61 victory over Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on Wednesday night in their first true road test of the young season.
With the win, the Lady Bengals improve to 5-0 on the year, the best start to a season in the program's 15-year history.
"We knew it was going to be tough, they are a good team. Our bench players really came in and played big for us. We were really able to turn things around in the second half with our intensity - getting to loose balls and getting to the foul line," head coach Yolanda Moore said.
Despite a poor first half shooting the ball, the Lady Bengals remained in the contest, keeping the deficit in single digits before trailing Mississippi Gulf Coast (2-2) by just two at halftime and taking the lead for good with just over 12 minutes to go in the game.
When LSU Eunice took the lead with 12 minutes to play, it was their first lead since they opened the night's scoring with a 2-0 advantage moments into the action.
Taylor Maricle led LSU Eunice with 23 points, including a trio of three-point baskets in the second half as the lead and momentum swung over to the Lady Bengals. Fellow sophomore Meghan Cross finished with 17 points of her own in the win.
Brooke Richard and Taylor Holzmeier each notched seven points, while Reagan Maricle finished with five points, Kelsey Thibodeaux added three points and Ashlyn Wiemann tallied two points to round out the scoring.
Samara Dingiswayo led Mississippi Gulf Coast with 15 points, while DeNesha Dillard finished with 12 points.
The Lady Bengals continue their short two-game road trip on Saturday when they travel to take on Bossier Parish Community College in a 4 p.m. tipoff. Saturday's game can be seen on Bengal All-Access.
