Lady Bengals move to 4-0 with Friday night home victory
The LSU Eunice women's basketball team improved to 4-0 on the young season with an easy, 75-37 victory over visiting Victoria College on Friday night in Eunice.
The four-game winning streak to open the season is the team's best start to a season since the 2010-2011 campaign when they also opened up 4-0.
"Tonight we came out very flat…but we picked it up in the second half. We were able to execute our offense a lot better and we went to the offensive boards more," head coach Yolanda Moore said.
"Baylie (Lee) came out and established a big presence early on in the game and got some good buckets and finished through some contact," Moore added.
The Lady Bengals led from the start, pushing the lead into the teens in the opening minute, where it stayed for most of the half before LSU Eunice went into the break with a 21-point lead. In the second stanza, the lead continued to grow until the final 36-point margin of victory.
LSU Eunice finished the night shooting 49 percent (28-for-58) from the floor, despite making just two three-point attempts (2-12, 17 percent) in the contest. They once again spent a lot of time at the free throw stripe, cashing in on 50 percent (17-34) of their attempts in the game.
The home squad grabbed 41 total rebounds (28 defensive, 13 offensive) in the game, while passing out 17 assists and collecting 11 steals as a team.
Sophomore Baylie Lee was dominant inside, finishing with a game-high 18 points for the Lady Bengals. Lee finished her night with seven rebounds as well.
Fellow sophomore Brooke Richard notched 10 points of her own, adding five rebounds, two assists and two steals to round out her stat line. Kelsey Thibodeaux and Taylor Maricle each finished with eight points, with Taylor Maricle tallying three rebounds, three steals and three assists and Thibodeaux collecting two rebounds.
Meghan Cross and Taylor Hurd both finished with six points, with Cross adding seven rebounds and Hurd filling her stat line with four assists, three steals and two rebounds.
Freshman Meghan Knight finished her first collegiate game with five points, while fellow freshman Ashlyn Wiemann added four points and six rebounds.
Sophomore Reagan Maricle notched four points, four assists and two rebounds on her night, while Victoria Fontenot, Misha Mouton and McKayla Willie each finished with two points to round out the scoring. Fontenot added a pair of rebounds and Mouton grabbed a rebound and two assists.
The Lady Bengals now turn their attention back to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College for a return matchup of last Wednesday's home victory.
"It's going to be tough going in there. Any time you are on the road, things tend to play out a little different. We are going to have to be more laser-focused with what we are trying to do with our game plan," Coach Moore said.
Wednesday night's game on the road against Mississippi Gulf Coast is set for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off and can be seen on Bengal All-Access.
