On the back of a career night by sophomore Lida Politopoulou, the LSU Eunice women’s basketball team won for the first time in nearly a month with a 71-49 victory over Delgado Community College in Miss-Lou Conference play at home on Wednesday night.

Politopoulou notched a new career-high with 32 points, including eight three-point baskets. Her three-point tally ranks second all-time in program history for most three-point baskets made in a game, one off the record held by Amanda Romero that was set in January 2006.

Her six three’s in the first half helped push the Lady Bengals (7-16 overall, 3-5 Miss-Lou Conference) out to a nine-point halftime advantage.

“It sure feels nice (to win). I thought from an effort standpoint, we played one of our better games,” head coach Michael Bari said.

“Lida was on fire tonight. We moved her from the point to the wing today, and she was able to get shots off that she wasn’t able to do as a point guard. It helped us out a lot, she had a great game,” he added.

Overall, the Lady Bengals finished the night shooting 40 percent (25-for-62) from the floor, and 38 percent (11-for-29) from behind the three-point line.

Delgado (12-13) shot just 31 percent (16-for-52) from the floor and 29 percent (6-for-21) from behind the three-point line.

Easily the leading scorer of the night with her 32 points and eight three-point baskets, Politopoulou led three Lady Bengals in double-digits.

Taylor Hurd finished with 17 points and Brooke Richard added 12 points, while Meghan Cross and Chesley Dubroc each tallied four points and Feleshia Walters scored two points to wrap up the LSU Eunice scoring.

Ciara Augillard led Delgado with 11 points, while Jacqueline Breland and Diamond Scott each added 10 points.

LSU Eunice led throughout after grabbing the lead for good just two minutes in, stretching their lead larger as the second half continued on.

Politopoulou hit a three-pointer just 57 seconds into the second half to notch her new career-high, breaking her previous high mark of 25 points back on Dec. 19 at San Jacinto. She had made six three’s in a game previously twice this season, against the Community College of Rhode Island during their Florida trip on Dec. 29 and also at Meridian Community College on Jan. 19.

The Lady Bengals now head into their final four regular season games of the season, all coming in eight days, when they head to Meridian on Saturday afternoon. They then return home to play Meridian on Monday night before traveling to Baton Rouge Community College next Wednesday and wrapping things up with Southern-Shreveport at home on March 2.

“Meridian is like Delgado, except they press and can shoot the ball better,” Bari said of the Saturday matchup.

“It will be a nice week and a half of basketball, and we will see if we can finish strong,” he added on the tough schedule to finish the season.

Saturday’s game at Meridian can be seen on Bengal All-Access and heard on KVPI 92.5 FM.
