Lady Bengals fight, drop road contest at Baton Rouge

The LSU Eunice women’s basketball team played a nearly perfect first half against Baton Rouge Community College on Wednesday night, but the Lady Bengals short bench caught up with them in the second half, falling 79-58 in Miss-Lou Conference action.
Leading most of the opening period, the Lady Bengals (7-19 overall, 3-8 Miss-Lou) took a one-point deficit into the break before Baton Rouge used pressure defense in the second half to seize the game.
Playing without Lida Politopoulou, the Lady Bengals also lost Kate Faulk to injury in the opening half, leaving them with seven girls on the bench in the second half.
“We played an excellent first half. We played with a lot of heart, a lot of enthusiasm. We went in at the half thinking we could pull this one out, but in overall it wasn’t meant to be,” assistant coach Jennifer Fontenot said.
LSU Eunice actually finished with a higher shooting percentage (49 percent) than Baton Rouge (39 percent), but the hosts had 35 more shot attempts in the game.
The Lady Bengals also had 43 turnovers in the game and were out-rebounded by the bigger, taller Baton Rouge squad 44-33 on the glass.
Taylor Hurd finished with a game-high 19 points, adding three steals, two blocks and two rebounds in 37 minutes of action, also a game-high.
Meghan Cross finished with 18 points, five rebounds and two blocks, while Chesley Dubroc added 10 points, four rebounds and three blocks for the Lady Bengals.
Feleshia Walters collected seven points and seven rebounds off the bench, Brooke Righard added four points and six assists to round out the LSU Eunice scoring.
The Lady Bengals wrap up their season on Saturday night when they host Southern-Shreveport in a 6 p.m. tipoff.
