The LSU Eunice baseball team wrapped up its’ season-opening series sweep of North Lake College on Sunday afternoon on the backs of their most complete game in the series.

The Bengals (3-0) used starter Zac Person’s nine strikeouts to keep visiting North Lake (0-3) at bay until the LSU Eunice offense went to work in the third and sixth innings.

Person finished his afternoon with five innings of work, allowing only one hit and two walks to go along with his strikeout total as the sophomore grabbed his first win of 2013.

“I thought today was our best effort and our most complete game,” head coach Jeff Willis said.

“It was good to see Zac go out, keep his pitch count was down for that many strikeouts, he threw a lot of strikes, and he was able to set the momentum for us,” Willis added.

A pair of North Lake errors pushed the Bengals’ first run across in the third, as Ray Veit  (3-4, RBI, 2 runs scored) opened the frame with a single before advancing to second on a throwing error before Adam Angelle (1-4, 2 runs scored) reached on an infield single. Veit raced home on a wild pitch to open the scoring before Angelle would tag up and score moments later on a Casey Rodrigue (1-3, 3 RBI) sacrifice fly into right field.

Landon Thibodeaux (2-4) connected on a double to left center field before stealing third and coming home on an Evan Powell sacrifice fly.
The Bengals added to their lead in the sixth when they posted four runs with the help of three hits in the inning, started by Trent Vidrine’s (1-3, BB) double to open the frame. Veit singled into left center to score Vidrine before Rodrigue doubled to right to bring home Stefan Trosclair and Veit. Angelle scored the final run of the inning two batters later on a Garrett Deschamp (0-3, 2 BB) sacrifice fly.

North Lake scratched its lone run across in the top of the seventh when it pieced together three singles against the Bengal bullpen.

After Person, Jevin Huval and Ben LeBlanc each closed out the game with two innings of work, with LeBlanc tallying two strikeouts.

The Bengals continue their season-opening homestand next weekend when they welcome St. Charles Community College to town for a three-game set beginning next Friday night with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
