Bengals wrap up series sweep over Northeast Texas
Box Score
The LSU Eunice baseball team wrapped up a series sweep over visiting Northeast Texas early Sunday afternoon, taking an 8-3 win for their fourth victory of the weekend.
The Bengals (18-3) saw their fourth consecutive solid pitching outing, with lefty Zac Person totaling eight strikeouts, while the offense scored two runs in three different innings in the win.
“With the wind blowing 25-30 MPH, I was really proud of our hitters, getting double-digit hits,” head coach Jeff Willis said.
“Zac was strike one a lot and was able to put away some guys with his breaking ball. This is the first weekend we’ve had all of our starting guys throw really well,” Willis added.
Person finished with a seven inning performance, scattering seven hits and three runs while walking three along with his eight strikeouts of Northeast Texas (9-15) batters.
Four LSU Eunice hitters each collected two hits on the afternoon, as Landon Thibodeaux and Stefen Trosclair each knocked a double as one of their hits. Evan Powell and Trent Vidrine also finished with a pair of singles.
Powell drove home three RBIs to lead the way, while Trosclair and Garrett Deschamp (0-2, BB) each brought home two RBIs.
The Bengals used a hit and a pair of walks to score twice in the opening inning, first scoring on Deschamp’s squeeze bunt before Powell sent a single through the left side to score Thibodeaux later in the inning.
LSU Eunice added two more runs in the third inning on three hits and a Northeastern Texas error. Trosclair reached on a bunt base hit before Thibodeaux singled up the middle. Powell then sent a ground ball that was thrown away and allowed both runners to score on the error.
After Northeast Texas scored two runs of their own in the top of the fourth with three hits, the hosts responded with two more runs in the fifth inning with the help of three hits and an error, all coming with two outs in the inning.
Thibodeaux doubled to left field before scoring one batter later on Deschamp’s ground ball and Northeast Texas’ ensuing error. Powell followed with his single to left field to bring Deschamp home.
Both teams added a single run in their half of the sixth inning before the Bengals tacked on a final run in the eighth on Trosclair’s RBI double to left-center field.
Following Person’s seven innings, the Bengal bullpen trio of Jevin Huval, Ben LeBlanc and Ryan Domingue combined for the final two innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while adding one strikeout between them.
The Bengals stay for three games this weekend, hosting Chipola College on Thursday and Friday with a pair of 6 p.m. starts before welcoming Southwest Mississippi Community College to town next Saturday for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
