Domangue dominant as Bengals take first game against Chipola

Pitching was the name of the game for the LSU Eunice baseball team on Thursday night, as they received eight innings of work from starter Brady Domangue en route to a 4-0 win over visiting Chipola College.
Domangue improved to 7-0 on the season after scattering seven hits and walking two batters and striking out six Chipola hitters. Domangue stranded eight runners on the bases and also got the visitors to ground into three double plays on the night.
The win was the Bengals’ eighth straight and pushed their record to 19-3 on the season, while they snapped the nine game winning streak Chipola (21-10) brought to town.
“The story of the night was Brady Domangue. He goes out and gives us eight strong innings, the longest outing of our pitching staff the whole year,” head coach Jeff Willis said.
“He threw a lot of breaking balls for strikes early in the count and then was he able to put some guys away with a better breaking ball with two strikes.”
A pitcher’s duel on both sides, the Bengals left 12 base runners on throughout the night, including leaving the bases loaded in the third and fourth innings before scoring all four runs in the sixth inning.
Four Bengals finished with two hits each as the team collected nine total hits.
Casey Rodrigue, Landon Thibodeaux and Trent Vidrine all added a walk to their two hit nights, while Tyler Chapman collected two hits of his own. Derek Herrington notched the only other hit for LSU Eunice.
After coming close in the previous innings, the Bengals finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth, when Vidrine singled to open the inning before Herrington connected on an RBI double to left-center to break the tie.
Herrington wasn’t on base long, as Chapman sent an 0-2 pitch well over the all down the left field line to increase the lead to three. Rodrigue continued the hitting, singling to right field, before wild pitches advanced him to second and third base.
Thibodeaux added the fourth run with a two-out single into center field to end the scoring.
The two teams will wrap up the quick two-game set tomorrow night, with a scheduled 6 p.m. first pitch.
“I expect a different Chipola team to show up tomorrow; one with a chip on their shoulder, because I guarantee that they aren’t very happy they got shut out tonight,” Willis said.
