Lady Bengals grab another doubleheader sweep
The LSU Eunice softball team swept both games of a doubleheader against visiting Coffeyville Community College on Monday afternoon, winning game one 3-0 behind solid pitching before their bats came alive in game two for a 11-3 victory as they improved to 30-4 on the season.
“The first game it took us a while to get our bats going. Julienne pitched a gem and kept us in the game. The second game, our bats came alive. Good things happen when you find the fat part of the bat,” head coach Andy Lee said.
In the opening game, pitcher Julienne Broussard allowed just two hits while striking out 11 batters, while the Lady Bengal offense scored one run in the second inning before their final two runs came in the fifth inning.
At the plate, LSU Eunice finished with six hits, all coming from different players. Taylor Simon’s lone hit was a double, the only extra base hit for the hosts in the first game.
Her double came in the bottom of the second inning, scoring Emily Nolan (0-1, 2 BB) for the game’s first run.
Randi Vosburg began the fifth inning with a single before Brooke Thomas (1-3, BB) and Kelsey Hollier (0-2, 2 BB) both walked to load the bases. Ashley Subervielle (0-2, RBI) brought home Vosburg with a sacrifice fly before Nolan drew a bases-loaded walk to score Thomas in what turned out to be the game’s final run.
Codi Covington, Brooke Clark and Pam Wainwright each added a hit as well.
In the second game, the offense exploded for three runs in the first inning before two runs in the second and four runs in the third inning to put the game out of reach.
Simon and Clark each finished with three hits to lead the way, while Nolan and Carey Alexis each connected on home runs as well to fuel the attack.
Caitlen Blanchard also finished with two hits, while Brooke Rozas and Morgan Tauzin each had one hit.
Nolan and Alexis each tallied three RBIs, Rozas added two RBIs, and Hollier and Ali Jung each notched an RBI each.
Brooklyn Guillot was in control in the circle, as Coffeyville managed just one hit off her as she walked two and struck out three during her 4 2/3 innings of work.
Nolan sent her three-run homer over the right field wall in the first inning before the Lady Bengals added runs in the second when Tauzin singled and came around to score on a wild pitch and Simon connected on a double before later scoring on Hollier’s RBI ground out.
After three singles started the third, LSU Eunice scored their first run of the inning off an error by the Coffeyville pitcher before Alexis connected on her three-run homer to center field later in the inning to extend the lead.
Coffeyville added two runs in the top of the fourth before the Lady Bengals scored in the bottom of the fourth on Rozas’ RBI single and in the fifth on Jung’s fielder’s choice to end the game.
LSU Eunice and Coffeyville matchup again tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader with the game one beginning at 1 p.m.
