Bengals take midweek series opener

The LSU Eunice baseball team used a five-run sixth inning to grab control of their series opener with visiting Triton Community College on Tuesday night, as the Bengals took a 12-7 lead in the high-scoring game.
The Bengals (22-3) finished with nine hits on the night and were walked by Triton (1-10) pitchers five times at the plate, but the visitors were able to stay in the ball game with timely hitting and the help of five errors committed by LSU Eunice.
LSU Eunice left 10 runners on base in the game, including leaving the bases loaded in the first and second innings, while Triton Community College left nine runners of its own on the base paths.
“I don’t know if there are too many positive things to say about tonight. It was a very very sloppy game, a lot of walks and a lot of errors,” head coach Jeff Willis said.
“Possitive thing about tonight is we scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth with three two-out base hits in a row. It got the momentum back on our side for the rest of the night,” he added.
Casey Rodrigue led the way for the Bengals, finishing 2-for-4 with a home run and five total RBIs while scoring four times as well.
Landon Thibodeaux also finished with two hits, driving in two RBIs of his own.
Stefan Trosclair notched a hit and an RBI, while Garrett Deschamp, Ray Veit, Derek Herrington and Tyler Chapman all added a hit as well.
LSU Eunice scored three runs in both the second and third innings to take a 7-2 lead into the top of the fourth inning, but Triton responded with three runs of their own in the frame.
After Triton added two more runs in the top of the sixth, the Bengals posted five runs in their half of the inning to give the game its’ final score.
Down one after the top of the first inning, Thibodeaux tied the game in the bottom of the inning with his RBI single to left that brought home Rodrigue before the Bengals used three hits and a Triton error to score three runs in the second inning, highlighted by Rodrigue’s three-run homer to right field.
Triton added a second run in the top of the third inning before the Bengals scored three runs in the bottom of the frame without a hit, using three hit batsmen, two walks, two wild pitches and a fielder’s choice to tack on their runs.
The visitors tied the game at 7-all after three runs in the fourth and two runs in the sixth innings before LSU Eunice scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to close the scoring.
In the sixth, Rodrigue contributed a two-run single up the middle before Trosclair collected his RBI single and Thibodeaux added a RBI double to right-center field.
Bengal starter Kirk Savoy tossed 3 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and five runs (two earned runs) while walking four and striking out three batters, before giving way to the bullpen.
Clay Tageant came on to toss 2 1/3 innings of relief, allowing two unearned runs, to grab his first win of the season.
Ben LeBlanc, Merrick Ardoin and Ryan Domingue wrapped up the game with an inning of work each.
The Bengals and Triton continue their three-game set tomorrow night with 6 p.m. first pitch.
“We are going to have to play with more energy than we did tonight. We have another opportunity to get better tomorrow and I’m looking forward seeing how our guys respond from tonight,” Willis said.
