Lady Bengal offense hits way to doubleheader sweep
The LSU Eunice softball team kept its hot hitting going on Tuesday afternoon, connecting on extra base hits all afternoon for a doubleheader sweep over Coffeyville Community College for the second straight afternoon.
The Lady Bengals (32-4) tallied 12 extra base hits over the two games, including three home runs, as they took game one 10-0 before an 8-0 win in game two.
“I feel like today was one of our best days; pitchers threw great, hitters hit a lot of hard line drives, defense turned double plays and we made a lot of routine plays. I was hoping we would put a complete day together,” head coach Andy Lee said.
In the opening game, the hosts scored nine runs in the first three innings to cruise to the win.
A two-run homer by Kelsey Hollier to left field, a sacrifice fly by Ashley Subervielle and an RBI double by Taylor Simon in the first inning got the scoring started before a two-run single by Codi Covington and an RBI triple by Emily Nolan during the second inning broke the game open.
Hollier added a double in the third inning to bring home two more runs, and Subervielle scored on a fielder’s choice by Randi Vosburg in the fourth inning for the final score.
Hollier racked up four RBIs on two hits for the Lady Bengals, the only hitter with multiple hits in the game as eight batters had hits.
Pitcher Julienne Broussard was in control in the circle, holding Coffeyville hitless over her three innings of work, needing just 18 total pitches.
Ali Jung and Brooke Clark each tossed one scoreless inning in relief to close the game.
The second game followed the same offensive formula, as the Lady Bengals scored five runs in the first three innings.
An RBI double by Nolan and an RBI double by Clark in the first inning supplied the early offense for LSU Eunice before they scored three runs in both the third and fifth innings for the final score.
In the third, the Lady Bengals scored on a sacrifice fly by Covington, bringing home Thomas, before Nolan and Simon both added RBI doubles later in the inning.
Nolan sent a solo homer over the left field wall in the fifth inning before Clark walked and Carey Alexis connected on a two-run homer of her own over the center field wall to end the game.
Brooklyn Guillot had an impressive outing inside the circle, allowing just one hit off of and allowing no earned runs, walking none and striking out three during her four innings of work.
Elizabeth Delifield threw a perfect fifth inning with a strikeout to close the game.
Clark, Nolan, Alexis and Thomas combined for seven hits and six RBIs in the second game as Nolan led the way with three hits, all for extra bases.
Thomas finished with two hits as Hollier and Morgan Tauzin each added a hit as the Lady Bengals finished with 10 total hits.
LSU Eunice is back in action this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders on the road, traveling to Jefferson Davis Community College on Friday and then taking on Meridian Community College on Saturday afternoon.
Both doubleheaders can be seen on Bengal All-Access.
