Lady Bengals sweep Meridian to push winning streak higher
The LSU Eunice softball team upped its’ record to 36-4 on the season with a pair of wins on the road against Meridian Community College on Monday afternoon.
In the opener, the Lady Bengals used a four-run fifth to push them to an 8-0 win before grabbing a 4-0 win in the second game for the sweep.
“The conditions were tough, we had adversity with the bus breaking down yesterday, but they showed up and the pitchers and defense dominated,” head coach Andy Lee said.
The first game saw pitcher Julienne Broussard rack up 11 strikeouts, allowing just one hit over five shutout innings.
Offensively, the Lady Bengals finished with seven hits, including two extra base hits, as Kelsey Hollier went 2-3 and scored two runs to lead the way.
Emily Nolan, Brooke Clark, Ashley Subervielle, Taylor Simon and Randi Vosburg each added one hit, as Clark and Simon both drove home two RBIs.
Nolan, Vosburg and Codi Covington added an RBI each as well.
The Lady Bengals took the lead on Covington’s RBI groundout in the first inning before Vosburg’s RBI single in the second pushed the lead to two runs.
Hollier scored on Nolan’s sacrifice bunt in the third inning and Pam Wainwright reached and circled the basepaths in the fourth inning to score on a passed ball.
LSUE Lady Bengals got one-run boosts in each of the second, third and fourth. In the second, the Lady Bengals scored on an RBI single by Vosburg, scoring Wainwright before Clark's two-run double got things going in the fifth, plating Hollier and Covington, while Simon's two-run double scored Clark and Subervielle.
The second game saw Elizabeth Delafield pitch a shutout, allowing five hits while striking out seven Meridian batters for the win.
Hollier finished 2-3 with a seventh inning two-run homer, while Simon, Clark, Wainwright, Subervielle and Brooke Thomas each added a hit as well.
Clark and Subervielle each added an RBI to go along with Hollier’s two RBIs.
The Lady Bengals opened the scoring with Clark’s RBI single in the third inning before Subervielle’s squeeze bunt pushed the lead to two in the top of the sixth.
Thomas singled with two outs in the seventh before Hollier connected on her shot to dead center field for the game’s final runs.
LSU Eunice now has 10 days off before they travel for a pair of back-to-back road doubleheaders, taking on Alvin Community College on April 4 before making the short trip to play San Jacinto Community College on April 5.
