Savoy's arm, Thibodeaux's bat lead Bengals to win
Box Score
The LSU Eunice baseball team grabbed its second win of the day and the second win of their series with Northeast Texas Community College after a 4-1 win on Saturday night.
The Bengals took an 8-1 win over Mississippi Gulf Coast earlier on Saturday afternoon.
Against Northeast Texas, LSU Eunice (17-3) finished with only five hits on a night with the wind gusting back in towards home plate, but saw starter Kirk Savoy (2-0) give them seven solid innings on the mound in the win.
“The story of the night was our pitching staff. It was a tough night to hit, we hit some balls hard that got caught up in the wind. We hit some balls on the screws that the wind held up and in different conditions those balls are probably in the gaps,” head coach Jeff Willis said.
Savoy’s seven innings was his longest outing of the season, while he allowed only one hit, three walks and one run – coming in the first inning – but struck out 10 Northeast Texas (9-14) batters.
“He threw phenomenal. He had electric stuff, his fastball was good tonight and his breaking ball was good. That’s what we need out of him all year,” Willis said.
Garrett Deschamp was the only player to record multiple hits, going 2-for-4. The Bengals saw all their offensive production come from Stefan Trosclair and Landon Thibodeaux, who each tallied one hit and drove home two RBIs.
Tyler Chapman’s double in the third inning was the only other Bengal hit of the night.
Northeast Texas scored their lone run in the first inning when the leadoff man walked, stole second and third base and then scored on a ground out later in the inning.
LSU Eunice responded with two runs in the third inning to take the lead and never look back, scoring both runs in the inning off of an error on a sharp hit grounder by Trosclair.
The only other scoring came in the bottom of the sixth when Trosclair led off the inning with a triple to right field before Thibodeaux connected on his two-run homer into the wind and over the left field wall.
Left-hander Trae Hester tossed the final two innings for the Bengals, allowing just one hit while adding one strikeout to grab his fourth save of the year.
LSU Eunice and Northeast Texas wrap up their three game set tomorrow morning with an 11 a.m. first pitch. Tomorrow’s start time was pushed up two hours to avoid the forecasted rain coming into the Eunice area late Sunday afternoon and into the night.
“It’ll be tough. It’s going to be a quick turnaround, so our guys need to get some rest. We’ll find out how tough our guys are tomorrow,” Willis said.
Tomorrow’s game can be seen on Bengal All-Access and heard on KVPI 92.5 FM.
