Lady Bengals roll to 40-win mark with sweep over LSU Alexandria
The LSU Eunice softball team reached the 40-win mark with a doubleheader sweep over LSU Alexandria on the road Wednesday afternoon.
The Lady Bengals (40-4) collected 26 hits over the two games, taking the first game by a 9-1 score before a 7-1 win in game two.
They received strong pitching in both games, as Julienne Broussard and Brooklyn Guillot each tossed complete games, with Broussard allowing six hits and striking out 10 batters in the opener before Guillot allowed six hits and struck out nine batters of her own.
“The pitchers threw well. They made adjustments, attacked down in the zone, really kept them off balance, and they threw a lot of strikes,” head coach Andy Lee said.
“We didn’t have our best hitting performance, but we got two out hits and hits when we needed it,” he added.
The first game saw Taylor Simon lead the way with three hits and three RBIs, while Brooke Thomas and Pam Wainwright each notched two hits.
Brooke Clark’s lone hit was a double as she added three RBIs, as Emily Nolan and Caitlen Blanchard each notched a hit and RBI as well.
After LSU Alexandria scored a run in the first inning, the Lady Bengals responded with a single run in the third inning to tie the game before scoring two runs in the fourth, four runs in the sixth inning and two final runs in the seventh inning.
Clark’s sacrifice fly scored Simon to tie the game in the third inning before Blanchard’s squeeze bunt and Simon’s single brought home the runs in the fourth inning.
The sixth was highlighted by Clark’s two-run double before she scored one batter later on Nolan’s RBI single up the middle. In the seventh, Simon’s two-run double deep into center field brought the opener to the final score.
Wainwright followed up her first game with a three-hit performance in the second game, as Thomas added three hits of her own.
Nolan and Clark each finished with two hits, as Nolan and Ashley Subervielle tallied two RBIs each, while Wainwright, Simon and Thomas each added one RBI.
LSU Eunice scored single runs in the first, second and sixth innings, and scored two runs in both the third and seventh innings in the win.
The Lady Bengals jumped on the board in the top of the first inning as Thomas led off with a single and scored on a fielders’ choice before LSU Alexandria tied the game in the bottom of the inning.
Subervielle’s RBI single in the top of the second inning gave the visitors the lead they would never give up, as Nolan and Wainwright each connected on RBI hits in the third inning to stretch the lead.
Nolan connected on another RBI single in the sixth before the Lady Bengals plated a run on an error in the seventh before Thomas’ RBI single later in the inning gave the game its’ final score.
The Lady Bengals return home on Friday afternoon against Baton Rouge Community College, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. in the doubleheader.
