Down to their final out in the ninth inning, the LSU Eunice baseball team plated two runs to tie the game and send the game to extra innings before winning it 7-6 in the 11th against Baton Rouge Community College on Saturday night.

Trailing 4-2, Adam Angelle gave the Bengals (41-8) a base runner with two outs before Casey Rodrigue’s RBI double to left-center cut the margin to one. Stefan Trosclair’s infield single one batter plated Rodrigue to tie the game before the visitors shut down Baton Rouge in the bottom of the ninth to go to extra innings.

After leaving two runners on in the 10th, LSU Eunice came through in the 11th when Rodrigue doubled to left to popen the inning, scoring when Trosclair bunted for a base hit and advanced to second on an error. Trosclair scored on Buddy McCoy’s RBI groundout before Landon Thibodeaux was intentionally walked to get to Garrett Deschamp.

Deschamp’s RBI double to left-center field scored Thibodeaux to push the lead to three heading to the bottom of the 11th.

Baton Rouge (25-27) put a runner on with a one-out walk before a two-run homer cut the lead to one, but Trae Hester came on to record the final two outs and seal the win.

“I am proud of the way the guys battled tonight. It was a good college baseball game,” head coach Jeff Willis said.

Rodrigue, Deschamp and Tyler Chapman each finished with two hits for the Bengals, while Rodrigue and Trosclair each drove home two RBIs to lead the way offensively.

Ryan Domingue came on in relief in the ninth for the Bengals and tossed 2 1/3 innings to earn his fourth win of the year before Hester earned his fifth save with the final two outs.

Starter Chad Reeves tossed the opening 4 1/3 innings, allowing three hits, three runs (two earned) and striking out four batters, while Ben LeBlanc’s 3 2/3 innings of middle relief, allowing no runs or hits, walking two and striking out three, kept the Bengals in the ballgame.

Down 4-0 after five innings, the Bengals scored their first run of the night in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly from Evan Powell, followed by a a quick inning by LeBlanc in the bottom of the inning.

Moments after the Bengals recorded the final out of the sixth, the stadium’s field lights all went out, causing nearly a 30 minute delay before play resumed.

LSU Eunice plated their second run after the delay in the top of the seventh on Rodrigue’s sacrifice fly to plate Angelle and set up the final innings.

The Bengals and Baton Rouge Community College wrap up their three game series tomorrow afternoon with a 3 p.m. first pitch in Eunice.

“It will probably be a wet field tomorrow, but I expect it to be another good college baseball game. Whichever team that shows up tomorrow will come out on top,” Willis said.

Tomorrow’s game can be seen on Bengal All-Access and heard on KVPI 1050 AM.
