Lady Bengals drop 2014-15 season opener on the road Friday night
The LSU Eunice women's basketball team opened its 2014-2015 season on the road Friday night in Houston, falling 89-38 to three-time defending NJCAA Division I national champion Trinity Valley Community College.
The Lady Bengals (0-1) return just two sophomores – and had just one healthy Friday night – as eight freshmen saw extended action on the floor in their first collegiate action.
"We have come a long way already this season, and we are learning and getting better through every missed shot and turnover. Tonight, the score didn't define who we are as a team – our defense and heart proved who the Lady Bengals will become this season," head coach Amanda Clemons said.
"We learn from each game, and we will take the things from this that will help us be successful for tomorrow night. We are not looking backwards."
Overall, LSU Eunice finished the night shooting 15-for-53 from the floor (28 percent) while hitting just five three-point attempts overall (5-for-17, 29 percent). They attempted just nine free throws in the game, connecting on three (33 percent). As a team, they grabbed 30 total rebounds, had 12 seals, three blocks and an assist, but turned the ball over 29 times in the game.
Sophomore Taylor Holzmeier led the offense with 12 points, including a pair of three-point baskets, adding five rebounds and two blocks. Newcomer Katie Lemieux finished a point shy of a double-double in her first game, tallying nine points and 10 rebounds while also adding an assist and block.
Freshman India Marbs notched eight points and seven rebounds, while Maggie Miller added five points, three steals and a pair of rebounds.
Freshman Amber Richard knocked down the first points of the Lady Bengal season, a three-pointer in the opening minutes, for her only points of the night while she also grabbed two rebounds.
LSU Eunice is back in action tomorrow afternoon when they take on tournament-host San Jacinto College in a 4 p.m. tipoff.
