Bengals drop series finale in extra innings to Galveston
Box Score The LSU Eunice baseball team dropped its first game of the season Sunday afternoon as Galveston College scored a run in the top of the tenth inning to win 2-1 and avoid being swept in the weekend series.
The Bengals (8-1) finished with just seven hits in the loss, tallying multiple hits just in one inning – the third, when they plated their lone run of the afternoon.
Galveston (6-4) would tie the game in the fifth following a two-out single that came around to score on another single later in the frame before plating the eventual game winning run with two outs in the top of the tenth inning on a Bengal throwing error.
"One error isn't the ball game. The cause of the loss today is an anemic offense. You score one run on seven hits and it forces you to play perfect. Physical errors are going to happen. The loss happens because your offense doesn't do anything and doesn't have quality at-bats throughout the game," head coach Jeff Willis said.
Ben Chauvin was the only LSU Eunice player to record two hits, while Derek Herrington, Brennan Bozeman, Tyler Chapman, Gabe Roberts and Ray Veit each notched one hit.
Chauvin singled to open the bottom of the third inning, advancing on a sacrifice bunt before Herrington brought him home with an RBI double into left field to give the Bengals the lead prior to Galveston getting on the scoreboard.
LSU Eunice had one final chance in the bottom of the tenth, as Roberts singled with one out in the frame and pinch runner Ralphie McDonald stole second and third base before being stranded there to end the afternoon as the Bengals struck out three times in their final at-bat.
LSU Eunice pitchers did their part, allowing just six hits and stranding seven Galveston base runners while striking out 11 batters in the loss.
Starter Nick Lawrence did not factor into the decision despite turning in six solid innings in which he allowed five hits, one walk and an unearned run, striking out four. O.J. Latin recorded five of his six outs via the strikeout over his two innings of relief, while Ben LeBlanc retired the only hitter he faced.
Sam Walley was saddled with the loss, allowing the go-ahead, unearned run and one hit in his 1 2/3 innings of work.
The Bengals are back in action Friday night as they open a three-game series at home against North Central Texas College beginning with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
Friday's game can be seen on Bengal All-Access.
