Bengals collect double-digit hits for second straight day in win over St. Charles
Box Score The LSU Eunice baseball team produced its' second-straight solid offensive game on Saturday afternoon, pushing past St. Charles Community College 10-0 in the middle game of the three game series.
The Bengals (5-0) plated at least one run in each of the first five innings while collecting 11 hits as a team. St. Charles (0-2) was held to just two hits for the second game in a row.
A trio of sophomores led the way at the plate, with Ray Veit and Tyler Chapman continuing their hot hitting from Friday night. Veit finished 2-for-3 with a three-run home run Saturday, while Chapman was 2-2 with two RBIs of his own.
Fellow sophomore Derek Herrington tallied three hits and a two-run homer on his way to a three-RBI afternoon.
Sophomore Stefan Trosclair finished 1-2 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored, while freshmen Brennan Bozeman (1 BB, 1 run scored), Juan Pablo Soriano and Ralphie McDonald (2 BB, 2 runs scored, 2 stolen bases) each collected a hit.
"The last few days, (Veit) has got some pitches that have been elevated during his at-bats and he hasn't missed on those pitches. He is seeing the ball well right now and there's some other guys seeing it well right now too. I thought overall, when the ball got elevated, our guys were able to put good swings on it," head coach Jeff Willis said.
Freshman starter Nick Hartman (2-0) earned the win for the Bengals after tossing five innings and allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out six St. Charles batters before sophomore Ryan Domingue wrapped up the afternoon with two hitless innings and a pair of strikeouts.
LSU Eunice jumped on the board in the first when Herrington led off the inning with a double before later scoring from second on Chapman's two-out drag bunt single after never breaking stride rounding third and scoring without a throw.
In the second inning, it was Herrington's turn, as he sent a 3-1 pitch over the left field wall and into the pine trees to push the lead to three before Veit sent the first pitch of his at-bat in the third inning down the left field line for his three-run shot.
The fourth frame saw the Bengals notch four hits, plating their runs on RBI singles from Herrington and Chapman and Trosclair's run-scoring double. The final run of the afternoon came in the fifth when Veit doubled to deep left field to open the inning before later scoring on Ben Chauvin's sacrifice fly.
