Lady Bengals fall on the road to Baton Rouge in Saturday action
The LSU Eunice women's basketball team saw its' 16-game winning streak snapped on the road against Baton Rouge Community College Saturday afternoon, falling victim to a string of scoring runs by the hosts as the Lady Bengals fell 80-63 in Miss-Lou Conference play.
With the loss, LSU Eunice (22-2 overall, 3-1 Miss-Lou) and Baton Rouge (16-5, 3-1) are now tied atop the conference standings with one more head-to-head matchup remaining and five games left overall.
The Lady Bengals shot 44 percent (23-for-52) from the floor and 35 percent (6-17) from three point range in the loss. They tallied free throws at a 52 percent (11-21) clip, but saw had only one attempt from the line in the first half.
Holding a one-point lead with ten minutes remaining in the first half, LSU Eunice saw Baton Rouge go on a 22-12 run to close the half and take a nine point lead into the break. Baton Rouge then used a 13-4 run in the opening five minutes of the second stanza to extend their lead to a comfortable margin.
Sophomore Reagan Maricle finished with a team-high 19 points in the loss for LSU Eunice, adding five rebounds and five assists, while fellow sophomore Meghan Cross also tallied double-digits with a 14-point afternoon, also adding seven rebounds.
Sophomore Brooke Richard finished with nine points, three assists, two rebounds and a steal, while freshman Ashlynn Wiemann notched eight points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Baylie Lee finished with six points, while freshman Taylor Holzmeier tallied four points, three steals and a rebound. Taylor Maricle finished with three points to round out the scoring, adding four rebounds and four assists.
Rosa Bryant finished with a game-high 30 points for Baton Rouge, while Ashley Williams (15 points) and Kasiney Williams (10 points) also finished with double-figures.
The Lady Bengals are back in action at home on Wednesday night when they welcome Southern University-Shreveport to town for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
Wednesday's game will be LSU Eunice's annual Play4Kay contest to help raise money for breast cancer awareness, and fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game.
