Hot bats push Lady Bengals to seven homers in doubleheader sweep
The LSU Eunice softball team collected seven home runs over a doubleheader sweep Thursday afternoon on the road against Bossier Parish Community College, winning the opening game 15-0 before a 10-0 victory in game two.
The Lady Bengals (29-1) totaled 31 hits in the two games – including 10 for extra bases – while scoring the 25 runs.
"Our team played very hard. We came out swinging and set the tone with the long ball. Our pitchers did great, threw two shutouts….it was a pair of great team wins," head coach Andy Lee said.
In the opening game, LSU Eunice scored six runs in the first inning before scoring three runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Codi Covington, Taylor Boulet and Brooke Clark each finished with three hits, while Emily Nolan, Destin Vicknair and Carey Alexis all tallied two hits.
Clark blasted two home runs, while the Lady Bengals also saw homers from Covington, Nolan and Vicknair each hit one homer.
Alexis and Ashley Subervielle (1-3) each tallied doubles.
Destin Vicknair earned the win, tossing 3 1/3 innings and allowing just one hit while striking out four batters before Elizabeth Delafield tossed the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out one batter of her own.
Clark's three-run homer in the top of the first inning ignited the scoring before the Lady Bengals plated three more runs, first on Subervielle's RBI double before Alexis followed with a two-run double of her own moments later.
Covington connected on her three-run homer in the top of the third before the fourth inning saw Clark hit her second home run, a solo shot to lead off the frame, and Vicknair followed with a two-run shot of her own. The final runs of the game came on Nolan's three-run homer in the fifth.
The second game saw the Lady Bengals again jump on the board early, as they plated four runs in the top of the first inning before adding two runs in the fifth, a single run in the sixth and seven runs in the seventh in the win.
Alexis led the way with three hits – including a home run – while Clark and Ginny Daggett (double, RBI) each notched two hits. Covington (RBI), Nolan (RBI), Camille Quebodeaux, Raven Cole (home run, 3 RBIs), Kayla Davidson, Abby Ohlin and Brittany Johnson all tallied a hit each.
Cole earned the win after tossing five innings in the circle, allowing two hits while striking out eight batters. Davidson wrapped up the final two innings, giving up just two hits and striking out three batters of her own.
Cole blasted a three-run homer in the top of the first to open the scoring before Alexis followed moments later with a solo homer of her own to give the Lady Bengals the margin they would hold until the fifth inning, when Nolan collected an RBI single and Vicknair (0-3) drove home another run when she reached on a fielder's choice.
Covington's sacrifice fly to the wall in the sixth plated another run before Daggett's two-run double in the seventh brought the game to its final score.
The Lady Bengals return home on Tuesday afternoon to take on LSU Alexandra in a doubleheader with the first game set for 2 p.m. and the second game to follow.
