Sophomores lead Lady Bengals to two road wins on Tuesday afternoon
The LSU Eunice softball team continued its push towards the postseason with a pair of road wins against Alvin Community College on Tuesday afternoon, winning game one 8-2 before a 7-1 victory in the second game.
The Lady Bengals (52-2) saw their sophomores drive in nine of their 15 total runs, including seven of the eight first game runs as they finished with 21 total hits over the two games while holding Alvin (13-33) to 12 total hits.
Pitchers Destin Vicknair and Raven Cole earned the wins in a pair of complete game victories, giving each an overall record of 23-1 on the year and keeping them in a three-way tie for the most wins in the country.
In the opener, Brooklynn Clark finished with three hits – a double, triple and home runs – while driving in three RBIs to pace the bats, while Emily Nolan added two hits – both doubles – and a pair of RBIs.
Vicknair tallied two hits, Codi Covington notched a hit and an RBI, while Ashley Subervielle (0-3) and Taylor Boulet (0-4) each drove home a run as well.
Vicknair allowed eight hits and two unearned runs in the win, walking one while striking out seven batters.
The Lady Bengals got on the board in the top of the fifth inning when Covington drew a bases loaded walk before Boulet added to the lead with her RBI sacrifice fly. Clark pushed the lead higher with her RBI double and Nolan followed with a two-run double in the big inning.
Alvin plated both runs in the bottom of the fifth on two hits and two LSU Eunice errors before the Lady Bengals tallied three runs in the seventh, first on Clark's two-run homer to center field and then on Subervielle's RBI sacrifice fly to finish the game's scoring.
The second game saw the visitors score in four of the seven innings, Led by Suberivelle's three-hit game. Covington, Carey Alexis (2 doubles), and Ginny Daggett (RBI) all finished with two hits, as Nolan (RBI), Vicknair (2 RBI, triple) and Cole (RBI) each added a hit. Clark (0-3) tallied an RBI as well.
Cole allowed four hits, walked one and struck out nine while giving up one run in the win.
Daggett's two-out RBI single put the Lady Bengals on the board in the top of the second inning before Clark added to the lead with her RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Alexis doubled and later scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to push the lead higher before Alvin scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff single and RBI double.
The visitors wrapped the game up in the seventh, while Nolan and Cole each collected RBI singles and Vicknair brought home two runs on her triple.
LSU Eunice is back in action tomorrow afternoon against San Jacinto Community College beginning at 3 p.m. with the second game to follow before they close out the regular season at home Saturday afternoon against Baton Rouge Community College beginning at 12 p.m., with Sophomore Day festivities going on prior to the first game.
