Reeves solid outing; Bengal bats lead to Friday night victory over Tyler
Box Score The LSU Eunice baseball team took advantage of some early errors en route to posting three big scoring innings as they grabbed an 11-0 series-opening victory over Tyler Junior College on Friday night.
The Bengals (34-11) plated three runs in both the first and second innings while being helped by four Tyler (31-14) errors in the first two frames before the hosts posted five runs in the fourth inning while finishing with eight total hits.
"I'm really proud of the way the guys competed tonight. I thought we played a really good game and put all phases of the game together, and that's what we've been looking for," head coach Jeff Willis said.
"We'll have to have a short memory and reset. Tomorrow's a new day and a long day with two games. We need to show up and compete, just like we did today, for 18 innings tomorrow."
Stefan Trosclair and Jordan Romero each finished with three-hit nights, as Trosclair drove in two runs and Romero added two RBIs of his own. Sam Walley (2 RBI) and David LaFleur (triple, RBI) each added a hit, while Tyler Chapman (0-3) also tallied an RBI.
Starting pitcher Chad Reeves notched his national-best 11th win of the season in the victory, tossing six shutout innings in which he allowed only four hits and three walks while striking out four Tyler batters. Reeves only allowed multiple baserunners once - in the fifth inning - in his outing.
The Bengals used two hits, two walks and three Tyler errors in the opening inning on the way to their three runs, as Trosclair and Romero connected on back-to-back RBI singles to begin the scoring, while LaFleur reached on a fielder's choice that also brought in a run.
In the second inning, LSU Eunice tallied two hits, two walks, two hit batsmen and a Tyler error as part of the three run inning, scoring the first run of the frame when Ray Veit (0-2) walked, advanced to second, stole third and scored as the throw went into left field. Trosclair drove in two more runs later in the inning with his single into left field.
The fifth inning saw the hosts tally four hits, including an RBI single from Romero and a two-run single from Walley before LaFleur connected on a run-scoring triple to deep left-center field and scored moments later on Chapman's sacrifice fly.
LSU Eunice and Tyler warp up their weekend series on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. with the second game to follow.
