Bengals wrap up weekend sweep with Sunday victory over Meridian
Box Score The LSU Eunice baseball team scored 13 runs on 13 total hits en route to a 13-9 victory over Meridian Community College on Sunday afternoon to sweep the teams' weekend series.
The Bengals (41-11) scored at least one run in every inning except the third frame, as they plated three runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings against Meridian (23-24).
"I thought Will Bacon went out there and had really good stuff. I've been telling people for the last few weeks that Will is going to play a big part of our success at the end of the year. It's really good timing for us to see that from him at this point of the year," head coach Jeff Willis said.
"The good thing about right now is that we are winning games in multiple fashions – on the mound, offensively, or putting all phases together. Good teams have a knack for finding a way to win in different areas of the game."
Starter Will Bacon (2-0) gave LSU Eunice five solid innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out six Meridian batters, while nine different Bengals tallied hits at the plate.
Jordan Romero led the offense with a 3-for-4 afternoon, adding two RBIs and a double, while Brennan Bozeman and Madison Nickens (double) each collected two hits and two RBIs. Stefan Trosclair (3 RBIs), Kyle St. Pierre (RBI) and Ray Veit (RBI) all added a hit, as did Derek Herrington, David LaFleur (double), and Tyler Chapman. Sam Walley (0-4) also drove in an RBI.
The Bengals plated a run in both the first and second innings before collecting their first hit of the day, as Herrington reached on an error and scored on Trosclair's RBI groundout in the first and Walley led off the second with a walk and scored on Veit's sacrifice fly.
Meridian's solo homer in the top of the third inning cut the lead to one for the moment, but the Bengals added to their advantage in the bottom of the fourth on Nickens' RBI groundout. The visitors again cut the lead to one run in the top of the fifth via three consecutive two-out singles, but LSU Eunice plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth, on a two-run single from Bozeman before he later scored on an error, to distance themselves from Meridian.
In the sixth, Trosclair drove in two runs with a single and Romero added an RBI single of his own to push the lead to seven before Meridian plated three runs on three hits in the top of the seventh inning, using a Bengal error and two RBI sacrifice fly balls to cut the deficit.
A bad pickoff attempt by Meridian in the bottom of the seventh plated Nickens, who had earlier reached on a single, allowed the Bengals to score a run in the seventh before adding three more runs in the eighth on RBI doubles from Romero and Nickens, as well as an RBI single by St. Pierre.
Meridian tallied four runs on two hits and two Bengal errors in the top of the ninth to bring the deficit to four, but that would be as close as they would get.
LSU Eunice is back in action on Friday and Saturday when they host Tyler Junior College to wrap up their regular season schedule, with Friday's game slated for 6 p.m. and Saturday's contest beginning a 1 p.m. start.
Both games against Tyler can be seen on Bengal All-Access.
