Lady Bengals sweep three in opening day tourney
GALVESTON – The second-ranked LSU Eunice Lady Bengals opened the 2015 season with three straight wins in the Galveston College tournament.
The Lady Bengals scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to grab a 6-4 win over Navarro College.
Ginny Daggett reached on an error, Maddie Edmonston singled and both scored on a single by Taylor Boulet.
Destin Vicknair struck out nine, allowed one earned run, five hits and three walks over eight innings for the win.
Navarro took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Caitlyn Moerbe walked and scored on a sacrifice by Nicole Matise.
The Lady Bengals grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning when Edmonston walked and scored on a Boulet double.
Boulet then scored on a hit to left field by Danielle Cruickshank.
Navarro answered with two runs in the bottom of fhe frame to retake a 3-2 advantage.
The Lady Bemgals tied the game in the top of the sixth when Edmonston reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a double by Boulet.
Boulet went 3-for-5 with three RBI, while Cruickshank (1-for-4, RBI), Camile Quebodeaux (1-for-3), Carmisha Payton (1-for-4) and Alexa Thibodeaux (1-for-3) recorded the other Lady Bengal hits.
In the 3-0 win over McLennan Community College, Raven Cole struck out 13 hitters and gave up just three hits over seven shutout innings.
After five scoreless innings, the Lady Bengals scored all their runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Edmonston walked, stole second and advanced to third on an error.
She then scored on a sacrifice by Destin Vicknair.
Payton (1-for-3)slammed the first Lady Bengal home run of the season for a 2-0 lead.
Ginny Daggett walked, stole second and third before touching home plate on a passed ball for a 3-0 lead.
Jessica Thomas (1-for-2) recorded the other Lady Bengal hits off loser Ashley Mills.
In Friday's finale, the Lady Tigers earned a 5-2 win over the University of Houston-Victoria.
Kayla Davidson earned the for Lady Bengals. as she pitched seven innings allowing one earned run, seven hits and one walk while striking out four.
LSU Eunice scored two runs in the top of the first, begun when Edmonston was hit by a pitch and Boulet reached on an error.
Edmonston scored on an error, while Boulet scored on a single by Cole.
The Lady Bengals added two more runs in the top of the third for a 4-0 advantage.
Cole walked with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a hit by Jordan Hartman.
Payton singled, stole second and later scored.
LSU Eunice added an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Edmonston doubled to left field and scored on a passed ball.
Two runs in the bottom of the sixth helped University Houston- Victoria close its deficit to 5-2.
Cole went 3-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored.
Jessica Thomas went 2-for-4 as Hartman went 1-for-4 with a RBI.
Payton went 1-for-3 and a run scored, while Edmonston went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
After two more scheduled games on Saturday in Galveston, the Lady Bengals will entertain Pearl River Community College in the home opener at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
