Lady Bengal pitchers tame Badger bats
MOBILE, Ala. – It was a spectacular display of stellar pitching on Thursday as the LSU Eunice hurlers combined for a no-hitter and a one-hitter in the top-ranked Lady Bengals' 12-0, 4-0 sweep at Spring Hill College.
In the opener, Destin Vicknair and Kayla Davidson combined for a no-hitter as the Lady Bengals rapped 12 runs on 17 hits.
Vicknair struck out nine and walked one, while Davidson fanned the final three batters to preserve the shut-out.
The Lady Bengals exploded for seven runs in the top of the first, begun when Taylor Boulet reached on an error and scored on Vicknair's double.
Katie Flowers and Danielle Cruickshank added back-to-back singles and then Vicknair scored on Jaci Lavigne's single to left field.
The Lady Bengals pushed ahead 4-0 when Flowers and Cruickshank were driven in by Carmisha Payton's single.
Abigail Ohlin doubled in Lavigne and Payton as LSU Eunice pushed ahead, 6-0.
Ohlin scored on Maddie Edmonston's hit to centerfield to give the Lady Bengals a comfortable seven-run cushion.
LSU Eunice added two more runs in the top of the second, aided when Lavigne doubled to plate Vicknair who opened the inning with a single up the middle.
Payton then doubled in Lavinge to give the Lady Bengals a 9-0 advantage.
LSU Eunice pushed ahead 10-0 in the top of the third frame when Ohlin reached on a bunt and then scored when Vicknair singled to centerfield.
The Lady Bengals added a run in the top of the fourth as Lavigne doubled to left and scored when Ohlin singled to centerfield.
LSU Eunice completed the mercy-rule win as Taylor Boulet singled and Kayla Braud doubled her in for the 12-0 finish as the Lady Bengals pitchers dominated the Spring Hill batters.
Vicknair helped her own cause at the plate as she went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Ohlin went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored and Lavigne went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored, while Payton went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.
Boulet went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Edmonston went 1-for-3 with a RBI.
Cruickshank went 1-fof-3 with a run scored and Flowers went 1-for-4 with a run scored.
In the finale, Raven Cole struck out 10, walked one in five innings, while Davidson struck out five and allowed one hit over the last two innings in the 4-0 win.
The Lady Bengals took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Lavigne singled and scored on a sacrifice fly from Vicknair.
After two scoreless innngs, LSU Eunice added a run in the top of the fourth when Ohlin singled with two outs and crossed home plate when Edmonston singled to centerfield.
The Lady Bengals pushed across two more runs in the top of the fifth, begun when Lavigne walked, Vicknair doubled and the duo scored on Cole's double to left field.
Vicknair led LSUE with a 2-for-3 outing with a RBI and run scored.
Lavigne went 1-for-3 with two runs scored, while Edmonston went 1-for-4 with a RBI.
Cole went 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBI as Ginny Daggett, Payton, Ohlin and Braud all went 1-for-3.
LSU Eunice (42-4) travels to Baton Rouge Community College at 5 p.m. Thursday before a doubleheader on Saturday at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
