Softball Opens Florida Tourney With Wins

NICEVILLE, Florida - LSU Eunice improved to 30-2 on the season as the Lady Bengals began the Northwest Florida tournament Thursday with a 5-1 win over Wabash Valley before cruising to an 11-0 victory over Southeast Iowa.
After two scoreless innings, the Lady Warriors (9-3) grabbed a 1-0 lead when Lacey Wiltzbacher hit a solo home run over the centerfield fence.
The Lady Bengals tied the game in the bottom of the fourth as Rebecca Skains hit a solo shot over centerfield.
LSU Eunice moved ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the next frame on solo home run by Jeanmarie Angelle.
The Lady Bengals sealed the win with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, begun when Darby Bishop doubled and pinch runner Olivia Gabor scored on a single by Skains.
Jessica Thomas (1-for-3) closed the scoring with a two-run home run as the Lady Bengals moved ahead, 5-1.
Abigail Leonards earned the win as she struck out two, walked one and allowed one run on four hits.
Jordan Dougherty finished the final 1.2 innings as she fanned three and did not allow a hit.
The Lady Bengals had eight hits as Skains went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Bishop also went 2-for-3.
In the shutout, mercy-rule victory over Southeast Iowa, the Lady Bengals exploded for six runs in the second inning to break open the game.
LSU Eunice jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, begun as Maddie Edmonston walked and scored Molly Wilson's triple as she then scored when Bishop singled to second base.
The offensive barrage in the second inning started when Savannah Lejeune singled and scored on Wilson's hit to right field.
Edmonston was hit by a pitch and scored on Bishop's hit to push the Lady Bengals ahead, 4-0.
Skains hit a sacrifice to plate Wilson, while Bishop scored when Bobbi Smith hit a line-drive single to left field.
Alli Daigle singled in Smith as the Lady Bengals pushed ahead, 8-0.
LSU Eunice capped the win with three runs in the third inning as Abby Mondy singled, Wilson walked and Bishop blasted a home run to centerfield.
Savannah Cates earned the complete-game win as she struck out seven and scattered four hits.
The Lady Bengals finished with 16 hits, led by Bishop (3-for-3, 5 RBI and two runs scored), Wilson (2-for-2, BB, 2 RBI and three runs scored),  Lejeune (2-for-3, a  run scored) and Daigle (2-for-4, RBI).

The Northwest Florida tournament continues Friday and Saturday in Niceville, Florida.
