Top-ranked Lady Bengals Improve to 36-2

Top-ranked LSU Eunice grabbed a 10-2, 4-3 doubleheader sweep over San Jacinto College-North Tuesday at Lady Bengal Field.

In the opener, the Lady Bengals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Maddie Edmonston singled and Rebecca Skains followed with a home run over the centerfield wall.

San Jacinto closed the gap to 2-1 in the top of the third as Missy Hernandez bunted and later scored on a single to right field by Gabriela Gomez.  LSU Eunice responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, begun when Edmonston singled to left and score on a hit by Darby Bishop.

The Lady Bengals moved ahead, 4-1 as Skains was hit by a pitch and crossed home plate on Jessica Thomas' ground-out to third.  LSU Eunice added a run in the bottom of the fifth when Skains was hit by a pitch again, advanced on an error and later stole home.

The Lady Bengals exploded for a five-run surge in the bottom of the sixth, begun when Bobbi Smith doubled and scored as Hope Vizinat reached on an error.  LSU Eunice capped the mercy-rule victory on three consecutive home runs by Wilson, Edmonston and Skains.

Abigial Leonards earned the complete-game win as she struck out four, walked two and allowed one earned run on five hits over six innings.  Edmonston went  3-for-4 with a RBI and three runs scored, while Skains went 2-for-2 with three RBI and four runs scored.

The second game was a battle until the end as the Lady Bengals held on for the one run win.

Edmonston led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run to give LSU Eunice a 1-0 advantage.

San Jacinto tied the game in the top of the fourth as Gonzalez reached on an error and later scored on the second Lady Bengal miscue of the inning.

LSU Eunice retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, sparked when Abby singled walked, Edmonston singled and both scored on Bishop's double into the centerfield gap.  Pinch runner Olivia Gabor scored the Lady Bengals' decisive run on Jeanmarie Angelle's sacrifice fly to right field as LSU Eunice led, 4-1.

San Jacinto responded with two runs in the top of the sixth when Shelbi Dogherty singled to short and Nalilah Robinson belted a home run over the right field fence.  San Jacinto threatened in the seventh when Hernandez singled and Alexis DeLeon walked, but Lady Bengal pitcher Jordan Dougherty struck out Gonzalez and forced Taylor Office to ground out to end the game.

Savannah Cates earned the win as she struck out one, walked one and allowed two earned runs on five hits over six innings before Dougherty closed the game.  Edmonston again had a strong performance at the plate as she went 4-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored.
