Lee Grabs 500th Career Softball Win

GRAMBLING – The top-ranked LSU Eunice Lady Bengals improved to 38-2 on the season with an 11-2, 12-8 sweep Tuesday over Grambling State University.

LSU Eunice head softball coach Andy Lee earned his 500th career win in the sweep over the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Bengals jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, begun when Madison Edmonston singled and scored on Darby Bishop's hit to left field as Bishop then scored on a passed ball.

Rebecca Skains walked and scored on Ali Daigle's sacrifice, while Jeanmarie Angelle was hit by a pitch and scored when Hope Vizinat singled to short as the Lady Bengals moved ahead, 4-0.

The Lady Tigers closed the gap to 4-2 in the bottom of the inning, begun when Mckenzie Johnson walked, Mercedes Williams reached on an error and both scored when Hailey Haynes doubled to left field.

LSU Eunice responded with four runs in the top of the second as Edmonston singled and scored on Jessica Thomas' ground-out.

Skains reached on an error and scored when Angelle singled to second, while Angelle scored on Daigle's hit up the middle.

Daigle crossed home plate on Vizinat's single to center as the Lady Bengals pushed ahead, 8-2.

The Lady Bengals added a run in the top of the fourth frame when Angelle doubled and scored on Daigle's sacrifice fly to extend LSU Eunice's lead to 9-2.

The Lady Bengals closed the mercy-rule win with two more runs in the top of the sixth inning, begun when Angelle singled to left and scored on Daigle's double to right field.

Vizinat then singled in Daigle as the Lady Bengals led 11-2.

Abigail Leonards earned the win as she struck out four, walked two and allowed one earned run and three hits over four innings.

Elizabeth Fontenot closed the final two innings as she scattered just one hit with no runs allowed.

Vizinat went 4-for-4 with three RBI, while Daigle went 2-for-2 with four RBI.

Angelle went 3-for-3 with a RBI and four runs scored as teammate Edmonston finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

The finale was an offensive display by both teams as the Lady Bengals and Lady Tigers combined for 20 runs on 22 hits as LSU Eunice held on for the 12-8 win.

The Lady Bengals opened with an early lead, begun when Edmonston reached on an error and scored on Bishop's sacrifice fly to right field.

Daigle singled and scored on an error to push LSU Eunice ahead, 2-0.

Grambling recovered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, begun when Caila Durgan singled and scored on a double by Haynes.

Williams reached on an error, while Haynes and Williams scored on a single by Tiffany Doss to give the Lady Tigers a 3-2 advantage.

LSU Eunice quickly responded with four runs in the top of the second to grab a 6-3 lead, sparked by singles from Vizinat and Savannah Lejeune who both scored on a double from Skains.

Edmonston walked and crossed home on a sacrifice by Bishop, while Skains scored on a double to center by Daigle.

The Lady Bengals added four more runs in the top of the third inning to push ahead, 10-3, sparked when Abby Mondy walked with two outs and Edmonston belted a home run over the left field fence.

Skains tripled to right and then scored on Bishop's single to give the Lady Bengals a 9-3 lead.

Molly Wilson reached on an error that allowed Bishop to score as LSU Eunice pushed ahead by seven runs.

Grambling closed the margin to 10-6 with three runs in the bottom of the inning, begun when Williams walked, Haynes reached on an error and Versace Hicks Butler walked to load the bases.

Williams scored on a wild pitch as Samara Perry singled in Haynes and Butler to pull the Lady Tigers closer.

LSU Eunice added two insurance runs in the top of the fourth inning, begun when Lejeune reached on a  fielder's choice and Mondy singled.

Skains' sacrifice fly plated Lejeune, while Mondy scored when Bishop singled to right field to give the Lady Bengals a 12-6 advantage.

Grambling added a run in the bottom of the sixth when Perry reached on an error and scored on Bailey Lemon's single.

The Lady Tigers closed the gap to 12-8 with another run in the bottom of the seventh when Haynes advanced on an error and scored on Tiffany Doss' single but LSU Eunice pitcher Jordan Dougherty forced two consecutive ground outs to end the game.

Lady Bengal starter Savannah Cates earned the win as she struck out two, walked three and allowed six runs (two earned) on four hits over three innings.

Dougherty pitched the final four innings as she struck out one and allowed two runs on two hits.

Edmonston went 2-for-3 with two walkes, two RBI and three runs scored, while Bishop went 2-for-2 with four RBI and a run scored.

Daigle went 3-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored as teammate Skains finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.

LSU Eunice entertains Lamar State College in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday at Lady Bengal Field.
