No. 10 Lady Bengals Sweep Lakeland

LSU Eunice improved to 26-2 on the season with a 13-1, 9-3 sweep over Lakeland Community College Monday at Lady Bengal Field.
The Lady Bengals jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, aided by home runs by Darby Bishop and Alli Daigle. Maddie Edmonston singled, Jeanmarie Angelle walked and Bishop cleared the bases with a homer over the centerfield wall for a 3-0 lead. Daigle followed with a two-out home run over the left field wall to push the Lady Bengals ahead, 4-0.

LSU Eunice added a run in the bottom of the second as Jaci Lavigne singled and scored when Angelle reached on a fielder's choice bunt.  Lakeland avoided the shut out with a run in the top of the third, but the Lady Bengals exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth frame to put the game away.  Lavigne reached on an error, Edmonston singled and they both scored on Bishop's hit up the middle.  Angelle singled and scored on Rebecca Skains' single to left, while Jessica Thomas reached on a fielder's choice to keep the rally going.  Daigle blasted her second home run of the game to extend the Lady Bengals' lead to 11-1.

Bobbi Smith and Lavigne added singles as LSU Eunice went through the batting order in the inning and both scored when Edmonston doubled up the middle to give the Lady Bengals a 13-1 advantage.  Abigail Leonards picked up the mercy-rule win as she struck out one and allowed one run on four hits over five innings of work.  Bishop went 2-for-3 with five RBI and a run scored, while Daigle went 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored.  Edmonston finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, as Lavigne went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Bobbi Smith went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Lakeland took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second in the doubleheader finale, but LSU Eunice scored three runs in the bottom of the third and never looked back.  Savannah Lejeune singled and scored on Edmonston's bunt single to tie the game, while Mondy singled before Angelle doubled in the two Lady Bengal baserunners to push LSU Eunice ahead, 3-1.

The Lakers closed the gap to 3-2 in the top of the fourth, but the Lady Bengals answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth when Angelle doubled and scored on Daigle's single to left field.

LSU Eunice sealed the win with five runs in the bottom of the sixth, begun when Lejeune walked and courtesy runner Mary Guillory scored on Edmonston's single to left field.  Mondy singled and Bishop doubled in Edmonston and Mondy to push the Lady Bengals ahead, 7-2.  Skains then belted a home run over the centerfield wall as LSU Eunice extended its margin to seven runs before Lakeland scored on a run in the top of the seventh to close the gap to 9-3.

Savannah Cates pitched the first two innings and allowed one run on three hits with one strikeout.  Jordan Dougherty earned the win as she struck out four and allowed one run on three hits over four innings.  Elizabeth Fontenot pitched the final inning as she walked one and allowed one run on two hits.  Daigle went 2-for-2 with a RBI, while Angelle went 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored.  Edmonston went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored as team mate Skains went 2-for-4 with two RBI and run scored.

Bishop (1-for-4, 2 RBI, run scored), Bobbi Smith (1-for-4) and Lejeune (1-for-1, 2 BB, run scored) recorded the other hits for the Lady Bengals who finished with 24 runs on 27 hits in the doubleheader.

LSU Eunice is set to travel to Jefferson Davis Community College in Brewton, Alabama on Wednesday before participating in the Northwest Florida State College tournament beginning Friday at Niceville, Florida.
