Bengals, Dolphins Split In Doubleheader

EUNICE – The top-ranked Bengals reached the 40-win plateau Saturday with a victory against Delgado Community College before the Dolphins won the finale.
Prior to the opening game of the doubleheader, the Bengals honored the memory of Deputy Sheriff Jeremy Triche, who was killed in the line of duty on August 16, 2012 while working for the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office. 
Triche played for the Bengals in 2004 and 2005 and members of the family were present for the ceremony that included several of Triche's former teammates.
Numerous law enforcement and fire department personnel were also recognized during the pre-game presentation.
Delgado (15-11) took a 1-0 lead in the opener as Daniel Lahare tripled and scored when Owen Magee grounded out.
LSU Eunice (40-2) exploded for three runs in the bottom of the third, begun when Zach LaFLeur reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Orynn Veillon's single to centerfield.
Will Watson singled and crossed home plate on a hit by Mark Fontenot to push the Bengals ahead before Turner Francis drove in Veillon for a 3-1 Bengal lead.
Delgado closed the gap to 3-2 in the top of the sixth when Lahare reached on an error and scored on Magee's hit up the middle.
The Bengals added to their lead with three runs in bottom of the frame, begun when Francis singled and scored on Bourque's single to second.
Bourque stole second and scored on LaFleur's hit to center as LaFleur later crossed home when Watson singled to left.
Delgado pushed two runs across in the top of the eighth, sparked when Lahare singled and scored on JP LaGreco's ground-out.
Magee singled and scored on a Bengal error as the Dolphins closed the margin to 8-4.
LSU Eunice added two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning, begun as LaFleur singled and scored on Watson's double to left field.
Watson scored on a sacrifice by Nick Coomes to extend the Bengals' lead to 10-4.
Bengal starter Erin Baldwin improved to 8-0 on the season with the win as he struck out six, walked two and allowed one earned run on three hits over seven innings of work.
LaFleur went 3-for-4 with a walk, a RBI and three runs scored, while Watson went 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored.
Francis finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored as Michael Claverie (2-for-4, RBI) and Bourque (2-for-4, RBI and a run scored) also had multiple hits for the Bengals.
Delgado 5, LSU Eunice 3
Delgado handed the Bengals their second loss of the season as the Dolphins grabbed a 5-3 win over LSU Eunice in the doubleheader finale.
Delgado jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the first inning, begun when Lahare reached on a fielder's choice and scored on LaGreco's hit up the middle.
Spencer Miller tripled in LaGreco, while Miller scored on an errant throw to give the Dolphins the early advantage.
The Bengals closed the gap to 3-2 in the bottom of the third, sparked by a two-out single by Coomes and double by Francis, who both scored on Hunter Feduccia's single to center.
Delgado added a run in the fourth when Brandt Broussard doubled and scored on Chip Bonura's single, while the Dolphins pushed ahead 5-2 in the fifth inning as Mageee reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a bases-loaded walk.
The Bengals battled back with a run in the bottom of the fifth as Watson doubled and scored on Francis' double to close the margin to 5-3.
Braxton Smith (2-1) suffered the loss as he allowed three earned runs on two hits as Ridge Heisler and Nathan Lee limited the Dolphins to two hits and two runs over the next six innings.
Francis (2-for-2, RBI and a run scored) was the only Bengal with multiple hits, while Feduucia (1-for-3) had two RBI.
The two teams complete the series at 1 p.m. Sunday at Bengal Stadium.
