Lady Bengals Split With Chipola College

HATTIESBURG, Mississippi – In a battle between NJCAA powerhouses, top-ranked LSU Eunice split games with the defending Division I champions Chipola College in a doubleheader held on the campus of Southern Mississippi.

The Lady Indians (40-13) grabbed a 6-4 win before the Lady Bengals (48-4) responded with a 5-4 victory in the finale.

Chipola jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening inning when Gabriela Santos reached on a fielder's choice and Madison Ragan followed with a home run over the left field fence.

The Lady Indians added three more runs in the bottom of the third inning, begun when Dana Edmundson walked, Santos singled and Ragan hit her second home run of the game.

Chipola chipped in another run in the bottom of the fifth frame as Edmundson singled and scored on a hit by Nalleli Lopez to push the Lady Indians ahead, 6-0.

LSU Eunice closed the gap to 6-2 in the top of the sixth inning, begun when Ali Daigle was hit by a pitch and later scored on a wild pitch.

Rebecca Skains and Daigle hit solo home runs in the top of the seventh to pull the Lady Bengals within two runs, but LSU Eunice could not get any closer.

Abigail Leonards suffered the loss as she struck out two, walked three and allowed six earned runs on six hits.

Savannah Cates pitched the sixth inning and allowed just one hit.

The Lady Bengals finished with nine hits, led by Smith (3-for-4) and Skains (2-for-4, RBI).

The Lady Indians grabbed 2-0 lead in the finale, begun when Edmundson singled and scored on a double by Santos.

Lopez reached on an error that allowed Santos to cross home plate for the second run of the inning.

Chipola pushed a run across in the top of the second when Liz Osborn was hit by a pitch and scored on a error.

LSU Eunice closed the gap to 3-1 in the bottom of the frame when Bobbi Smith reached on an error and scored on Lejeune's single to left field.

Chipola added a run in the top of the fourth inning when Lopez walked and scored on a foul fly out by Jamie Morgan.

The Lady Bengals exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to grab a 5-4 lead and then held on for the win.

Hope Vizinat doubled, Abby Mondy singled and both scored on Maddie Edmonston's double to centerfield.

Darby Bishop reached on a fielder's choice, while Daigle's double to right field pushed across Edmonston and pinch runner Olivia Gabor as the Lady Bengals grabbed the one-run  lead.

Elizabeth Fontenot earned the complete-game win as she struck out two, walked two and allowed two earned runs on four hits.

The Lady Bengals finished with nine hits, led by Mondy (3-for-3, RS), Vizinat (2-for-3, RS), Edmonston (1-for-3, 2 RBI, RS) and Daigle (1-for-2, 2 RBI).

LSU Eunice travels to Mobile, Alabama Saturday for a doubleheader with No. 3 Northwest Florida State College (40-5) at Spring Hill College.
