Bengals Earn Doubleheader Sweep Over TJC

Top-ranked LSU Eunice earned an 8-4, 3-2 doubleheader sweep over Tyler Junior College Friday at Bengal Stadium.
The two teams are set for a 1 p.m. contest Saturday, weather permitting as heavy rain is predicted for the Eunice area.

After three scoreless innings in the opener, the Bengals (47-3) scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth begun when Hunter Feduccia  tripled and scored on a hit by Trenon Trosclair, who later scored on a hit by Zach LaFleur.

LSU Eunice added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, begun when Michael Claverie singled and crossed home as LaFleur reached on an error.

LaFleur stole second and third before scoring on a sacrifice squeeze bunt by Nick Coomes as the Bengals pushed ahead, 4-0.

LSU Eunice added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Claverie was hit by a pitch with two outs and Trosclair homered to left field for a 6-0 advantage.

Tyler (32-14) closed the gap to 6-3 with three runs in the top of the eighth inning when Jared Wells hit a bases-loaded double.

The Bengals responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, begun when Janson Bourque singled and scored as Mark Fontenot reached on a fielder's choice.

Turner Francis also advanced on a fielder's choice and scored on sacrifice fly by Bo Myers.

The Apaches closed the final margin to 8-4 in the top of the ninth when Nathan Melvin tripled and scored on Colton Whitehouse's sacrifice fly.

Erin Baldwin improved to 10-0 on the season as he struck out six, walked four and allowed four hits in 4.2 shutout innings.

Trosclair went 3-for- with three RBI and two runs scored, while LaFleur finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.

Bourque went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored, while Feduccia finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.

In the finale, the two teams battled to a scoreless tie until Tyler Junior College pushed two runs across in the top of the fifth inning.

Brenten Schwaab, Wells and Jared Pauley all walked to load the bases, before Mason Mallard singled in Schwaab.

Methvin was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate Wells before the Bengal defense stiffened to end the threat.

LSU Eunice tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, begun when Coomes doubled and scored on Orynn Veillon's double to left field.

Claverie then ripped a triple to score Veillon as the Bengals battled back to force a 2-2 tie until Claverie walked in the bottom of the ninth inning and scored on a passed ball as LSUE grabbed the win.

Braxton Smith improved to 3-1 on the season as he struck out six, walked one and did not allow a hit over 4.2 innings on the mound.

Starter Hayden Marze struck out 10, walked six and allowed two earned runs on two hits over 4.1 innings.

Coomes went 2-for-4 with a run scored as the only Bengal with multiple hits, while five others contributed for the seven total hits.
