Lady Bengals Win Battle of Louisiana

VILLE PLATTE – The top-ranked Lady Bengals improved to 40-2 on the season as LSU Eunice earned a 10-7, 9-4 sweep over LSU Alexandria Sunday at the Ville Platte  recreation complex.
The Lady Bengals grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Rebecca Skains hit a solo home run, but LSUA tied the game in the bottom of the frame as Caitlyn Moerbe walked and scored on single by Emily Nolan.
The Lady Generals pushed ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the third, begun when Julinn Torres walked, Nolan singled and Kimberly Gonzalez doubled in Torres and courtesy runner Jessica Hampton.
LSU Eunice exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth inning to grab a 7-3 advantage.
Jeanmarie Angelle singled, Bobbi Smith reached on a bunt and Jessica Thomas walked to load the bases.
Molly Wilson singled in Angelle and Smith as Skains followed with her second home run of the game to drive on Thomas and Wilson.
Darby Bishop then hit a solo home run to give the Lady Bengals a crucial four-run lead.
LSUA scored twice in the bottom of the inning, aided when Moerbe singled and scored as Torres reached and scored on an error.
Angelle hit a home run in the top of the fifth to give the Lady Bengals an 8-5 margin and LSU Eunice then added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning begun when Skains singled and scored on a passed ball.
Alli Daigle walked and scored on Angelle's single up the middle to push the Lady Bengals ahead, 10-5.
The Lady Generals scored twice in the bottom of the frame, begun when Torres singled and Nolan both singled with two outs.
Gonzalez then drove in Torres, while courtesy runner Kimber Gruehl scored on an error as the Lady Generals closed the gap to 10-7.
Lady Bengal pitcher Jordan Dougherty grabbed the win as she allowed one earned run on seven hits on the last four innings.
LSU Eunice starter Abigail Leonards allowed two earned runs on six hits with three walks over three innings.
Skains went 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored, while Angelle went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Bishop finished 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored as the Lady Bengals had 10 runs on 11 hits.
LSUE 9, LSUA 4
LSU Alexandria grabbed a 2-0 lead to open the finale as Moerbe and Casey Corcoran both singled and scored.
The Lady Bengals responded with three runs in the bottom of the first, begun when Maddie Edmonston singled and scored on Angelle's hit to left field. Angelle later stole home as Daigle walked, stole second and scored when Wilson reached on an error.
LSU Eunice exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second, begun when Smith reached on a fielder's choice as Mondy  and Skains both walked.
Smith scored on a sacrifice fly by Edmonston, while Mondy and Skains crossed home on Bishop's double to centerfield.
LSU Alexandria scored a run the fourth and fifth innings on home runs by Raquel Granados and Moerbe to close the gap to 8-4 before Daigle belted a solo shot for the Lady Bengals in the bottom of the fifth to seal the 8-5 win for LSU Eunice.
Elizabeth Fontenot earned the complete-game win as she struck out one, hit two batter and allowed four earned runs on eight hits.
The Lady Bengals were limited to six hits but Angelle led with a 2-for-3 outing with a RBI and two runs scored.
LSU Eunice will entertain Lamar State College in a Tuesday doubleheader set for 2 p.m. at Lady Bengal Field.
