Lady Bengals Grab Quarterfinal Thriller

CLINTON, Mississippi –  It took extra innings, but top-ranked LSU Eunice advanced to the semifinals of the NJCAA Division II World Series at Traceway Park in Clinton, Mississippi.

With the game tied at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, Lady Bengal Rebecca Skains ripped a single down the leftfield line and then scored when Alli Daigle dropped in a hit into shallow centerfield as the Lady Bengals won 3-2.

Labette Community College grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Alix Berlanger singled, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a ground –out by Samantha Gistrap.

LSUE tied the game in the bottom of the third when Jordan Bertot hit her second home run of the tournament.

The game stayed even until the top of the seventh when Kendall Morisett doubled down the third baseline and later stole home to give the Lady Cardinals a slim 2-1 advantage.

The Lady Bengals kept the game alive when Bobbi Smith reached on a bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeanmarie Angelle.

LSUE pitchers Abigail Leonards and Jordan Dougherty combined for the win as Labette finished with nine hits, five strikeouts and no walks.

Maddie Edmonston went 2-for-4 as the Lady Bengals finished with seven hits over nine innings.

The Lady Bengals will face the Jones County Junior College/Kirkwood winner in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Friday.
