LSU Eunice Finishes Regular Season 50-4

MARIANNA, Florida – Top-ranked LSU Eunice picked up two wins in the final day of the 2016 regular season as Bengals  set a new win record  at 50-4 overall.

The 2012 national championship team finished 49-4 in the regular season before setting the overall record at 57-5.

LSU Eunice opened the day with a 10-8 win over NJCAA Division I's No. 8 St. John's River College (39-12) before holding on for 4-3 victory over Florida Gulf Coast State (38-13).

St. John's jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, begun when Nick Owens was hit by a pitch and Alec Dowell singled and both scored on consecutive bases-loaded walks.

LSU Eunice responded with three runs in the top of the second, begun when Turner Francis was hit by a pitch and scored as Hunter Feduccia advanced on an error.

Feduccia later stole third and scored on Trenon Trosclair's bunt to push the Bengals ahead, 3-2.

St. John's answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead as Omar Villaman and Owens both singled and scored on a Bengal error.

The Bengals battled back with two runs in the top of the third as Will Watson walked and scored on a single by Feduccia, while Francis singled and scored on Mark Fontenot's hit as LSU Eunice led, 5-4.

The Bengals added four more runs in the top of the fifth frame, sparked when Francis singled and Michael Claverie belted a home run over the left field fence.

Fontenot walked, Trosclair doubled to left and both scored on a sacrifice bunt by Janson Bourque to push the Bengals ahead, 9-4.

LSU Eunice added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Bourque singled, stole second, advanced to third on a wild throw before scoring on a St. John's error.

St. John's battled back with four runs in the bottom of the ninth, begun as Alec Dowell singled, Hunter Alexander walked and Nick Koslowski  reached on an error before Wes Weeks hit a grand slam to close the margin to 10-8.

The Bengal defense then recorded three straight outs to preserve the win.

Braxton Smith improved to 4-1 on the season as he replaced starter Hayden Marks and went 6.1 innings with nine strikeouts and allowed two runs on eight hits.

Francis went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Feduccia finished 3-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored.

Trosclair went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored as Bourque went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

In the finale against Florida Gulf Coast,  Nick Coomes opened with a one-out home run to give the Bengals a 1-0 lead.

The game remained that way until the top of the fifth inning when Bourque walked and scored on a Commodores error.

The Bengals added two more runs in the top of the sixth, begun when Francis singled and scored on a  sacrifice squeeze bunt by Trosclair.

Orynn Veillon doubled and scored as Nick Schexnaider reached on a Commodore miscue to push the Bengals ahead, 4-0.

Florida Gulf Coast State College exploded for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, begun when  Jordan Tylski reached on an error and later scored on a bases-loaded single by Nick Nelson.

Roberson walked and scored when Bennett reached on a fielder's choice, while  Bowden McGuffin also walked and scored on a single by  Josh Faulk before Alec Wisely filed out to end the game.

Ridge Heisler improved to 5-1 on the season as he struck out five, walked one and allowed seven hits over 5.1 scoreless innings.

The Bengals were limited to five hits, but the Commodores committed three errors.

LSU Eunice will now head to the Region 23 tournament   May 19-22 in Mississippi with the site yet to be determined.
