Lady Bengals Fall In Region 23 Tourney

LSU Eunice fell into the loser's bracket of the Region 23 softball tournament  Saturday morning as Jones County Junior College grabbed a 4-2 over the Lady Bengals.

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, begun when Kayln Watts reached on a bunt and later stole home.

Cori McCrary advanced on an error and scored on hit by Natalie Houge to give Jones an early advantage.

The Lady Bengals closed the gap to 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Hope Vizianat singled and scored on a double by Maddie Edmonston.

Jones pushed ahead, 3-1 in the top of the sixth inning when Hogue singled and scored on a sacrifice by Ashley Valentine.

LSU Eunice pulled closer when Darby Bishop hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, but Jones added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Watts walked and scored on a ground out by Britany Baty.

Jones County pitcher Rachel Hayes limited LSU Eunice to five hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

With the loss, LSU Eunice (52-6) will take on East Central, who earned a 7-3 win over Mississippi Gulf Coast in an elimination game at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Jones County (44-6) advances to Sunday's regional championship game and also earned a berth in the World Series set for May 18-21 in Clinton, Mississippi.
