EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice's play on both sides beyond the arc helped the Bengals take down Lee College, 64-61, inside the HPRE Center on Monday. The victory pushed the Bengals (8-5) to six games.
The Bengals fired 42.9 percent (7-for-25) from three-point range while limiting Lee College to just 2-of-13 (15.4%) from downtown. The Bengals also held the Rebels to just 32.9 percent (22-for-73) from the field.
The two teams sparred for the better part of the first half before LSUE was able to land the first big blow. A 10-0 run to close the half capped off by a
Josh Fontenette (Cecilia, LA, Cecilia HS) three-pointer helped LSUE take a 36-23 lead into half.
Kaedrick Williams (Ruston, LA, Lincoln Prep HS) led the Bengals for the evening with a double-double, scoring 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Michael Smith Jr. (Lafayette, LA, Comeaux HS) (13 points) and
Brennan Maddox (Fairview, LA, Fairview HS) (12 points) were the two other LSUE players to have a double-digit point night.
Lee College would creep back into the game, cutting the LSUE lead to 38-34 midway through the second half. The Bengals responded with a quick 9-3 mini-run to help push LSUE back to a double-digit point lead.
The Rebels would make a late push and get within three points, 63-60, with under 35 seconds to play. A
Caleb Starks (Lafayette, LA, Lafayette Christian HS) free throw and two defensive stops would help LSUE seal the win.
The Bengals will hit the road for their final tournament of the season, playing in the FSW Classic on the campus of Florida Southwestern State College in Fort Myers, Fla. LSUE will face Community College of Beaver County on Friday, December 28 at 3:00PM to open the two-day event.
LSUE closes with the homestanding sixth-ranked Buccaneers on Saturday, December 29 at 5:00PM.
