Early Home Runs Highlight Sweep of Pearl River

EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice used a pair of big home runs in Game One as part of a solid offensive showing in a doubleheader sweep of Pearl River.  The Bengals collected 17 runs and 25 hits in the two victories over the Wildcats.

The two long balls helped LSUE up its yearly total to 29 on the season, currently ranked second in NJCAA Division II.

The pair of wins help cap off a grueling 21-game in 14-day stretch where the Bengals went 17-4 in that span.

LSUE takes an 11-day break before heading to north Louisiana to take on Bossier Parish CC.  The March 26 doubleheader is set for a 2:00PM start.

GAME ONE

Ally Howard and Madison Monson helped power LSU Eunice to a 10-0 mercy rule win in five innings.  The duo smashed home runs to pace the Bengals' 10-hit attack.

Howard's three-run home run in the first inning helped set the tone for a fast paced LSUE offense that scored all of its runs in the first three innings.  The no-doubter to centerfield was just Howard's third of the season and first since February 8.

The Bengals followed up the home run with a five-run frame an inning later.  Emily Henderson led off the scoring with a bases loaded two-RBI single.  Sierra Gasca and Hannah Carpenter each drove in runs before Haley Godeaux's sacrifice fly ended the scoring.

Madison Monson came up in the third and tagged her 12th home run of the season, a two-run blast to right center.  The freshman still leads the NJCAA Division II in home runs.

The duo of Heather Zumo and Jeanne Trahan combined to throw a four-hit shutout.  Zumo (16-5) notched the win after throwing the first three frames, giving up three hits and one walk while striking out a pair.  Trahan tossed the final two innings, scattering one hit and one walk with one strikeout.

GAME TWO

The Bengals used a hot start to help hold off a late rally by Pearl River in a 7-5 win to close out their doubleheader with Pearl River.

LSU Eunice plated a five-run first inning highlighted by Haley Godeaux's two-run double.  The Bengals started off the scoring after three consecutive hits including a double by Madison Monson and Emily Henderson's single to put LSUE on the board.  Godeaux would also score off of a Pearl River error on a stolen base attempt of third base.

Pearl River answered in the third inning with a pair of two-out runs, one off of an Ally Howard error on a flyball.  Haley Godeaux responded in the bottom of the third with an infield single that helped score Howard and give LSUE a 6-2 advantage.

Godeaux led the way for LSUE with a 3-for-3 game with 3 RBIs, helping the Cecilia HS product break out of a 2-for-19 slump.

Emily Henderson pushed the LSUE lead to 7-2 in the fourth with a run scoring single to left.

The Wildcats put the Bengals on their heels with three runs in the fifth to make it a 7-5 game and left the bases loaded.  Jeanne Trahan worked through the traffic for that inning in relief of Morghan LaTour.  LaTour (4-1) picked up the win after four innings of work, giving up four runs off three hits and one walk.

Heather Zumo shut down the Wildcats for the final two innings, striking out five while giving up one hit and one walk.
