EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice received stellar performances in the circle and at the plate from its rookies in the Bengals' doubleheader sweep of Baton Rouge CC. The Bengals (37-14) blanked the Bears 4-0 in Game One, followed by a 13-5 decision in the nightcap.
Heather Zumo continued her dominant freshman season with a complete game shutout in Game One, and was helped by the bat of fellow fresh face Madison Monson. Lexi-Jo DeBarge enjoyed a breakout game in the Game Two, collecting five RBI's and falling a double shy of the cycle.
LSU Eunice improved its season-long win streak to 11 games with the pair of wins. The Bengals return home next Thursday, April 26, for a twinbill against Blinn College. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for April 14 but canceled due to rain the Acadiana area.
GAME ONE
The dynamic duo of Heather Zumo and Madison Monson shined in their return to the Baton Rouge area in the Bengals' opening win over BRCC, 4-0.
Zumo collected her 20th win of the season in typical fashion. The Central High product threw her fifth seven-inning complete game shutout of the season. Zumo (20-5) struck out four batters while giving up four hits and one walk. The Bears had threatened with base runners at third base twice in the game, but Zumo was able to get out the jam on both occasions.
LSUE capitalized on Bears mistakes to take an early 2-0 advantage. Mima Doucet led off the game with a single and would eventually score from third base on a double steal error by BRCC. Hannah Carpenter would plate another run a frame later on a base loaded wild pitch.
The potent Bengals offense was held in check by Shelby Breaux for a majority of the game. Breaux only allowed six hits but issued five free passes.
The Bengals would get two insurance runs in the fifth inning as Madison Monson blasted a double to centerfield that would score Kelci Bodin and Mima Doucet. Monson led the Bengals cause with a 2-for-4 game.
GAME TWO
A seven-run second inning helped spark a runaway finale for LSU Eunice as the Bengals upended Baton Rouge CC, 13-5. The potent Bengals offense bounced back with an 18-hit barrage.
Lexi-Jo DeBarge paced the big frame and the game for LSUE. The Lake Arthur freshman collected three hits and five RBIs on the night including two hits and three RBIs in the second inning. DeBarge finished a double shy of the cycle after blasting a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
McKenzie King put the game's first run on the board in the first inning with a bases loaded infield single to shortstop. King was one of six LSUE players to record a multiple hit game.
LSUE led off the second inning three straight hits highlighted by DeBarge's run scoring triple. Mima Doucet would drive in DeBarge a batter later. Back-to-back singles later in the frame from Sierra Gasca and King would push the LSUE lead to 5-0. After Gasca scored on a wild pitch, DeBarge ended the seven-spot with a two run single to centerfield to make it 8-0 Bengals.
That was more than enough for the Bengal pitching staff, led by Jeanne Trahan. The freshman collected the win after throwing four innings in relief, giving up one unearned run off four hits. Morghan LaTour received the no-decision after only pitching the first two innings of the night, yielding five runs off eight hits and one walk.
Kaeleigh Crutchfield pitched a scoreless seventh inning, striking out a batter and issuing one walk.
After BRCC crept to within 8-4, LSUE rattled off four more runs in the fourth inning highlighted by DeBarge's home run. Hannah Carpenter added a bases loaded two run single to extend the lead back to eight runs, 12-4. Mima Doucet capped off the scoring with a seventh inning double to plate Lakyn Wales.
Doucet, Madison Monson and DeBarge each had a three-hit game to lead the Bengals at the plate.
