EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice pounded three home runs and Heather Zumo tied the program single-season record for wins as the Bengals took down Cowley College, 12-3, to advance in the NJCAA National Tournament.
Zumo (29-8) recorded her 29th win of the season to tie Julienne Broussard's mark set in 2013. The freshman tossed three innings, giving up one earned run on two hits.
LSUE (48-18) stormed out the gate, exploded to a quick 6-0 lead through its first three at-bats. The Bengals recorded a three-run first inning highlighted by Haley Godeaux's two-run double. Lakyn Wales responded with a lead-off home run an inning later to push the LSUE lead to 4-0. Darian Doucet and Sierra Gasca drove in runs in the third inning to finish the Bengals' quick start.
After Cowley scored in the third inning with a two-out single, the Bengals responded with a four-run fourth inning. LSUE received a pair of two-run home runs by Emily Henderson and Darian Doucet to push the Bengals edge to 10-1.
Ally Howard and Haley Godeaux helped LSUE secure the run-rule victory with two runs in the sixth inning.
Henderson and Godeaux paced the 13-hit LSUE attack with three hits each. Godeaux led all Bengals with three RBIs on the afternoon.
LSU Eunice will face Jones County in the bracket final tomorrow at 12:00PM. This will be the fifth time this season the two Region 23 rivals have met with Jones winning all four meetings. The two teams have met in the NJCAA Tournament finals the last three years.
The winner of the LSUE and Jones County matchup will face the winner of Des Moines Area and Phoenix College for a spot in the National Championship game.
