Offensive Muscle Helps LSUE Mount Sunday Comeback

EUNICE, La. – While hardly a finished product, LSU Eunice showed a glimpse of what could come with a come from behind victory over North Lake College, 17-10 on Sunday at Bengal Stadium.  The win gave the Bengals (3-0) a season opening series sweep of the Blazers.

LSUE found itself in an early 8-1 after North Lake scored six runs in the second inning, fueled by Dillon Eatman's Grand Slam.  The Bengals responded with a big number of their own in the bottom half of the frame.

The Bengals would score nine runs off five hits including a pair of home runs to roar back and take their first lead of the game, 10-8.  Austin Kirkpatrick's (Breaux Bridge, LA, Teurlings Catholic HS) three-run blast to left field helped cut the deficit to three runs followed by Brooks Rushworth's (Sterlington, LA, Sterlington HS) three-run home run that gave LSUE the lead for good.

The LSUE pitching staff would only allow two hits the next four innings as Jack Merrifield (Prairieville, LA, Dutchtown HS) provided an impressive relief debut.  Merrifield (1-0) would relieve starter Kade Gonsoulin (New Iberia, LA, Catholic-New Iberia HS) in the second inning, giving up two runs in that frame.  Merrifield would string together four shutout innings, striking out two batters and walking one.

Gage Trahan (Maurice, LA, Vermilion Catholic HS), Austin Andrishok (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) and Jacob Hammond (Monroe, LA, Ouachita HS) would combine for eight strikeouts in the final three frames, giving up two runs.

Slate Fuller (Lake Charles, LA, Barbe HS) would close out the power display with a solo home run in the third inning while River Town (Zachary, LA, Zachary HS) drove in a team-high four RBIs including a two-run double in the eight to close out the Bengal scoring.

Town was joined by Austin Kirkpatrick with a three-hit game while Brooks Rushworth and Tristan Welch (Baton Rouge, LA, Catholic-Baton Rouge HS) had two a piece in the 13-hit LSUE attack.

The Bengals will stay at home this upcoming weekend for a three-game series against Paris JC.  Friday's opener is set for a 6:00PM start from Bengal Stadium.  The game can be seen live via Bengal All-Access on www.lsuebengals.net.
