EUNICE, La. – No. 5 LSU Eunice turned in another dominant performance to grab a 4-0 shutout victory over Jones College in the Region 23 Championship on Friday at the Bengals Soccer Complex. With the win, LSUE (15-1) clinched its second consecutive Region 23 title and earned the right to host next week's South District playoffs.
LSUE also ran its current win streak to 12 games.
"You always want to show your best form at the end of the season and I think we're getting awfully close as evidence by tonight," LSU Eunice men's soccer head coach Josh McReynolds said. "After getting bogged down a little in the first half, we made some adjustments and our team really came to life."
The Bengals roared with three goals in a ten-minute span.
Angelo Fabricio (Jundiai, Brazil, St. Amant HS (LA)) was the first to tally a goal after half, stopping a poor Jones clearance near the top of the penalty box and blasting it into the far post in the 53rd minute to give LSUE a 2-0 edge.
It was Fabricio's ninth goal of the season.
LSUE would get back into the scoring ledger just two minutes later. Fabricio keyed a fast break with a clearance header to
Igor Castillo-Veliz (Baton Rouge, LA, Woodlawn HS) off a Jones Corner. Castillo-Veliz raced the length of the field before laying off to
Enzo Bodin (Léhon, France, Les Cordeliers) who split a pair of defenders before tucking in his third goal of the season on the back post.
Castillo-Veliz would put the game to bed in the 60th minute with arguably the goal of the season. The sophomore worked on the outside left edge of the box, dodging two Jones defenders before sending a right footed screamer that slowly rose before tucking in the back post upper 90 to push the LSUE advantage to 4-0.
The goal secured Castillo-Veliz's first career brace after netting the first goal of the game in the 15th minute after pushing a low dribbler to the left side near post.
Not to be outdone,
Zaykeese Smith (Charlestown, St. Kitts & Nevis, Charlestown Secondary School) turned in one of his best outings of the season in net. The freshman helped the Bengals record their ninth shutout of the season, saving four shots including two impressive stops in the second half.
LSU Eunice will now host the four-team South District playoffs next weekend at the Bengals Soccer Complex. The Bengals will welcome Jones back to Eunice, as well as the top two finishers in this weekend's Region 14 tournament. The single-elimination bracket will award the South District nomination into the upcoming NJCAA Division I National Tournament on the campus of Tyler JC.
LSUEBengals.net will have the full tournament field, game days and times for the South District playoff when it becomes available.
